What .300 win mag ammo for hogs? - 07/02/15 04:06 AM

Hi,

I usually buy the Remington Core-LoktŪ .300 Win mag 180-Grain when shooting.
Is there any other ammunition that is better suited for hog hunting at around 100 yards?

Thanks

Anything, really. 150 grains or heavier. I like the heavier stuff. 180 is perfect.

I don't see how you can go wrong with a 180 grain .300 WinMag for hog shooting. As long as you hit the hog decently, you're pretty much guaranteed pork for dinner.

This is 180 SST, running shot so a little far back. But you get the idea

Unless your unsatisfied with the 180 corelocks I see no reason to change.

Nice scope btw, looks huge.

You need to educate me here, you shot the pig in the gut and the thing dropped down?

All those intestines hanging out, is that you with a knife?

Was just using it as en example for bullet expansion at impact. Yes, it was a poor shot. IFRC it was around 150 yards or so and the hog was running full speed from my right to left in a small clearing. I rushed the shot.

Don't understand the knife question

Never mind the knife question, misunderstood.

Looks like the pig didn't get that far after being hit smile

I shot a 200 pound boar with the 180 grain core lokt. Pig dropped dead at the spot.
Bullet entered from an angle into lung area, but it didn't exit. It was just underneath the skin on the other side, so almost.

Do you think a 150 gr would have left an exit wound?

I like the 150 grain SST's loaded to max, or just a little under max, velocity. They do really nasty things to pigs. Like Easts pig above, you get evisceration quite often with shots that hit the pig anywhere other than head/neck.

I have pics of pigs that I have shot with the round listed above where the only thing holding the front half to the back half is some fur & skin along the back. Seriously it is a highly explosive bullet that will flat out dismantle a pig. If you are a meat hunter, disregard my post entirely as it is the opposite of what you are after. Imagine what a pig would look like if he swallowed a hand grenade and it went off inside of him. That's what a 300 Win. Mag with a 150 gr. SST will look like.

I've been shooting Hornady Whitetail 150gr through my 300. Cheapest ammo I've found and shoots great.

180's to the head while they are running turns them into a helicopter. True story.

Save some money and buy a .223 I kill them all the time with 55 grain soft points to the body and head and 55 grain fmj s to the head or spine. May even be lighter on your shoulder and your neighbors ears. up
