First attempt at coyote trapping

We have been overrun with coyotes at our property for years. We try and shoot as many as possible and I try to call them in when I can, always something needs to be done around the property or house. Usually Mowing.... lately . Grass literally grew 1' in a two week period.

I set out a dozen MB550 about mid March and so far have caught 5. Some were obviously identified and dug up, I reset periodically and actually caught 2 in traps that were occasionally unearthed. I recently pulled all traps in the field and cleaned and re-dipped today. Also bought another dozen and will make an attempt to put them all back to work in a week or so. Been a learning experience to say the least, but I think I'll make more of a dent in the population this way as opposed to shooting on site. Just a couple of pic's.

Anyone have any recommendations on Pan covers? I had used some latex ones and have to say I didn't care for the way they performed. Recently ordered some screen ones and will be trying them next. Also tips on which lures or baits, someone had good results from, would be appreciated too.

I have used the screen PC for years, make them myself and use under the pan. Clean foam under the pan works better, but you have to have "0" smell on it.

Order some good coyote pee online, or collect it from another property a long way off. Just using a pee set will catch even older smart males. I collected my own coyote pee when I had traps on different properties, just open them up, find the bladder and drain with a syringe and put in a bottle.

Also collect pooh the same way, but use what you find on the ground, I always had a large 1 gal. cleaned pickle jar full. Pooh alone is also a great post set, just control the approach as you do with any set. These are great sets since they give the illusion of an intruding yote on their turf.

Thanks for the insight Dennis. I do have coyote and bobcat urine(ordered on line), I use around my set. Mainly been using Gland and food lures for the dirt hole sets. I have heard of gathering poop, just haven't experimented with it yet. I'll be sure to on my next sets. we have many family groups on our 2000 acres, can i collect urine from the other side of the ranch to simulate intruding yotes? I would think so, but wanted your opinion if you thought they were far enough away.

Good job! For pan covers you can use a coffee filter, shop towel or a mesh cover but I just like using some "duff" like cotton or grass under the pan, just wad it up then pull apart a little and get in the edges under he pan just enough to keep he dirt off.

Sure would give it a try, males are territorial and they don't like "newbies"! I'd bet that every coyote knows the scent of every other coyote for a couple miles, get some in trade from another guy somewhere and it should spark curiosity in any yote. I used to have 2-3 bottles of urine, each came from different locations of places I trapped, or other trappers and I traded.

Sorry for the stupid question, but what do you dip traps in?

Logwood trap dye, or similar and/or wax. Prevents rusting. I never messed with waxing though.

I'm using A product called Full Metal Jacket this time.
