17 HMR - 02/22/15 05:16 PM
Will this round bring down hogs?
You can bring down hogs with a bb, but that doesn't make a bb gun a good gun for hog hunting. Yes, people have killed hogs with .17 hmr, but it would be a bad round for actually hunting hogs. Brain shots would be ideal. Any other shot and you can expect to be tracking your wounded hog a long distance. The .17 just doesn't make much of a wound channel.
Yep..so will a .22...and a 9 mm... Is it a good choice for the job? No.

I just wanted a 17 HMR for coyotes but thought it might double as a pig gun...I have a 30-30 as well...

Yes, close head shot only. But in most cases you are going to be under gun even for coyote. Do some online research. 17HMR is fun to shoot, plink, varmint, but you are going to be way under-gunned.

Yes but as another has said it is not ideal. Sure wouldn't use it if I was going to be up close and personal. Most kills go off without a hitch but I had two close calls with pigs. Glad I had a 44 as my sidearm. I now use a 500 s&w. Overkill? Probably, but I sure feel better having it!
Wouldn't be my first or second choice

Yes, but it will require an almost perfect head shot. It wouldn't be my first choice, but if it's what I had I'd use it before I'd let a hog walk.

As stated you can put a big hog down with a 17hmr....but its all about shot placement and bullet...put a hog down with mine shooting a cci 20grn fmj...drt! But i hit him right between his ear and his eye at 75yrds...if you can put the pill in there or his ear...down they will go!
