Need advice.. - 01/08/15 06:31 AM

Hello,
I have never hunted for hog before, and I will be going on my first hog hunt this weekend. My question is, can more than one person hunt from the same blind and have a successful hunt? I have hunted for deer with more than one person in a large blind and we both were able to harvest a good sized 8pt each because after about 30 minutes the deer began to return to the feeder, but would hogs return to a feeder after being scared away from the first shot? or should we both select a hog and shoot at the same time during the hunt. Any advice I can get from some experienced hog hunters would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Gabe, Sometimes they'll return and step over a down pig to feed; other times they'll head for the next county. Me and my buddy have shot a lot of hogs from the same blind using the old countdown: 3 - 2 - 1 - boom. Works on a stalk hunt, too. Hint: Don't pick the same pig; guy on the right shoots one on the right, guy on left picks one on left. Don't ask how I know this.

And welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the help Dennis, another buddy and I used that type of strategy when Coyote hunting, and did fairly well. However, when you shoot at them boys they run for the hills and don't come back too quickly..One more question, does it matter who counts?...lol

You can for sure! They are usually in groups. And remember hogs are mostly nocturnal.

Countdown works for me too. Hogs don't tend to return the same day in my experience though.

I don't get hogs returning either. I have had hogs not leave, but once they leave, they didn't come back that night.

If you see a boar sticking around a soul the whole time shoot that soul. If you down one in heat then you have a chance to shoot many more that same sit.

Also depends on how many different group of pigs are using the feed site.. they always have different schedules.

I want to thank everyone who has replied. I am feeling a little more confident in the tactic that we are going to use since both my friend and I have to hunt from the same blind. Thank you Novasot for the advice of shooting the sow first(kinda like a natural bait) I hadn't thought of that tactic, if I get a chance to us it I will let you know. Buckenvy, I will be using an AR10 and my friend is either using a lever action 30/30 or a bolt action 270, I'm not sure which rifle he plans on bringing. I do know that I am going to try and shoot as many as I can, Hopefully I'll be able to share some pic's on Monday. Wish this newbie good luck...

Go for it Man!
I've had great success introducing friends and family to night hunting in a couple of different 4x8 double blinds.
We use a gen 1 and a digital night vision hand scanner to locate and watch them come in, then use a pair of 6.8 ARs with nightvision to clean up.
One has a Pulsar N750 and the other has a Photon 5X with auxilary illuminators on each.

We go for controlling, so our strategy is simple.
We use a combination of water hole with a timed feeder set to 9PM to draw them in and Feral Crack Pipes loaded with corn to keep them there once they show up.
We watch the area with game cameras to get an idea when they are coming in but even with the best recon, we still spend a few evenings watching stars and airplane lights instead of pigs!
We get into the blind before dark and wait and watch for the sounders although we will take singles too.
If some small pigs come in, we just watch them for a while - they tend to send in the young, hungry and stupid before the older, smarter sows come in, followed finally by any boars that may be trailing the sows.
It may take a few minutes for the older ones to come in after the first few come but they are usually watching and listening just out of sight.
After the alpha sow and her court show up, we watch them for a few and determine who the leaders are.
We target these educated pigs first using a count and work our way down in age/size thru the sounder.
It gets fast and furious for a few seconds and we try to anchor as many as we can as fast as we can and then cleanup.
A lot of time, when you take the leaders at first, the smaller pigs will run in circles around them, allowing follow up shots.
Also taking the sows and other smart pigs first makes taking the rest easier and slows down the babymaker process even though the younger ones will start breeding shortly.

Hope that helps and again: GO FOR IT!!

set up close with a pump 12ga with 00 buck. it's like jumping ducks on a pond. next best option would be your lever 30-30 with open sights. spray and pray! We've actually done this and it works!

If you haven't practiced this in advance, you'll need to jerk the trigger a little to be sure you both fire together. When I'm alone, I squeeze the trigger such that I don't know exactly when my rifle will fire. This improves accuracy, and of course it helps to avoid flinching. However, when you're doing a countdown you must make sure your rifle fires EXACTLY when you want it to.

Generally, it doesn't matter who does the counting, as long as they count loudly enough for you to hear them clearly. Generally, my buddy and I have an agreement that once the count starts, it completes. If the hog you're aiming at moves and gives you a lousy shot, tough! The counter has enough going on to keep his aim on target while counting clearly and steadily, without worrying that his partner is suddenly going to say "Wait!, my hog moved!" just as he's getting ready to shoot.

Me and my brother killed 3 hogs in the same stand from different groups within two hours one time. One of them was the biggest hog I've ever killed
