Who stole my hogs?

Who stole my hogs? - 10/27/14 03:32 AM

Been seeing 15-20 hogs at a time on my game cameras 5+ nights per week for about 8 weeks straight. Then October 15th hit and i have maybe 5 TOTAL pics of 1-2 hogs at a time...maybe 1-2 times per week! (This is on 3 different game cameras on different parts of the property.)

It seems as soon as the damn acorns started falling the hogs have zero interest in corn. Our property has a ton of acorn trees and a ton of cover around them...so im guessing those pigs are just rolling over from their nap and snacking on acorns and rolling back over and going back to sleep?

My sounders of big groups have disappeared and now i have just a couple of knuckleheads every now and then. To add insult to injury, this warm weather has caused the wasps to come back out and surround every structure we own! (I hate wasps)

Anyway, just venting...but wanted to see if anyone else has seen their big group of hogs that were coming nightly...evaporate like an animal on the verge of extinction! lol I'm hope they are just making babies while staying under cover...

Good luck to those hunting deer next weekend!

R your feeders still throwing at the same times as they were? My dad had a boar or two on his feeders consistently almost every night all summer but he was throwing corn at night. If I shot one, a new boar would replace the dead one and take over the feeder within a week. But ever since he started throwing at sunrise and sunset to get ready for deer season, the hogs don't come around nearly as often.
theories?
1. Acorns started falling and hogs would rather eat them.
2. It's getting to be deer season and a lot of properties are now throwing corn on feeders that haven't been active since last year.
3. Txlawman said hogs learn yearly crop planting cycles on farms and will travel long distances to hit those farms when the crops are right for eating. Maybe it's crop harvesting time for your pigs?

COLT .45,

The good thing about those hogs your seeing on camera is...THEY WILL GET BIGGER, go getcha some!

BLAKESTER,

I dont really deer hunt much, havent killed one in a few years even though our property has a ton on there. Im just a hog killing machine with probably close to 50 in last two years between me and friends. So, my feeders stay the same year round. Even if they were changed, i have 40 gallon pig barrels staked to the ground 30 yards from each feeder that the pigs will chase around for hours at a time. I dont think its the feeders.

There is not much farm land at all around our lease. But i wont rule out the possibility of them taking a vacation from our place. There is some hunting pressure but last time i killed one about 7 weeks ago...the big groups were back nightly for another 2 weeks with no hunting during that time. Hmmmmmm

I seem to remember the acorns falling earlier last year and us having a pig drought for about a month in October. But on opening day of deer season...i killed 3 pigs in a matter of 30 minutes! Killed 1 at stand, loaded it up and drove towards camp and saw a group. Jumped out and killed another. Loaded it up and killed another on the last turn before camp after previous group ran into woods and across road right where i was headed! Just lucky i guess. Im going to go with the acorn story for now. We just need this damn weather to cool off! 90 degrees is not acceptable going into November!

Anyone near Jack or Young county having same issue?

Hahaha (watch video). Odds are it's probably just the plain ripe acorns.. But then I started thinking what if it isn't. What if it's hunting pressure from neighboring properties.. What if there are a lot more feeders throwing corn in the area to get ready for deer season... What if it's something really cool that I don't even know about ya know..what.. I thought we were in the trust tree.. In the nest.... http://youtu.be/08n82tGqoK0

Is it a problem that the swine are not destroying your property as much as they were?

LOL...YES IT IS!
We have a hunting property and not a farming property. We want them here. We love to Hunt and eat them and welcome them all. I certainly dont wish for hogs on anyone's land that dont want them there...send them our way please.
By the way, i checked pictures from last year and there was a 6 week dead period from September 9th to end of October 25th...then BAM...large groups were back again. Its gotta be the acorns since they started falling later this year. If the same thing happens, i should start seeing them again soon.

Re: Who stole my hogs? - 11/03/14 04:55 PM

I am seeing the same thing on my lease, hogs gone on vacation ....

starting in May , have hogs every night hitting 5 bait stations/feeders
4 sows with piglets, 6 large distinct boars, with several stragglers/squatters that come once in a while

Then about 3 weeks ago (I suspect when acorns were dropping ).. hogs disappeared from cams
I have 1-2 inches of corn on the ground now

Good news is when hogs are away the deer are more active, we're now seeing 2 10 points, several 4s,
a massive tall 7, and giant 9 with thick base and tines and couple nice and wide 8s

Bad news: they're all nocturnal bucks
