Re: Feral Cats - 01/11/12 03:57 AM

nope, we have one or two that are around camp, don't mind them to much to keep rats away but if we saw any out hunting they will be taking a permanent nap

Nope. Feel the same way about feral dogs. Have problems with packs of them running deer.

One came out on the range today, had 300WM loaded but the GF was with me so I didn't take the shot; really wanted to see cat vs 300WM

I actually had one run deer off of my feeder, guess they just didn't like him much. He was at the feeder every time it ran for three days straight until he got a 100grn thunderhead in the face. The deer wouldn't come to the feeder while he was there but came back the next day after I killed him.

We have them here on the farm. They live in the dump and I have seen them around the barn and every once and awhile in the field, but hardly ever see them. Have caught a couple in a live trap but let them go. Was pretty scared to open the door on that thing to let them go as they were straight wild. I dont have a problem with them. They keep the rodents down quite a bit.

Have several around the place. Good for snakes, mice, and rats. Also gives my daughter's little dog some good exercise. Still waiting to see what he is going to do if he ever catchs one. Probably learn to quit chasing cats smile

If they were screwin' with my huntin' I'd take them out. We don't see them much at our place. I think coyotes and whatnot pretty much keep that under control. Wouldn't mind them around camp for controlling rats and whatever. Don't need to kill just to kill...

Lots of folks don't understand the difference between barn cats and feral cats.
Most every ranch or farm has one or oftentimes many more wild azzed barn cats running around keeping the snakes and rodents in check.
Those guys are part of the crew, they have a job and they do it.
Folks shouldn't pick up the kittens, and cat food is not on the grocery list.
Get too many you whack a few, get too friendly you throw a rock at em.
But you also protect them from predators as much as possible, and realize that they have an important role to play in your operation.
These are different from true feral cats that you find in the brush that are eating baby turkey, quail, songbirds etc..

if they are over a quarter mile from a barn they are fair game, and a lot of fun to see how high you can make one jump..

I had 2 that I allowed to inhabit the barn. That is until I smelled cat whiz around the boat. Got another one that has moved in at the barn now. We'll see how long he lasts.

+1

I would also add around my place I shoot any tomcats I see. I absolutely can't stand them stinking up my barn, but war was formally declared after one got on my truck and sprayed the fresh air intake. Any cat that looks twice at my hens gets a lead surprise. Also for all they hype people attribute to hogs for being hard to kill, cats will show back up the day after you watch the buzzards eat them.
