Calling with the Foxpro

I know there is another thread inquiring about it but my question is when you are calling and nothing has showed after 10-15 minutes do you let the FP keep running loud? switch sounds? I know most of time I know most people have said to move spots but I am just curious about the calling. Thanks.

A friend of mine has one and it has been used quite a bit recently by us.
Usually we just forget what sound is playing and laugh at some stupid joke or something we said, then realize we werent even paying attention.
Last night had a coyote walk right past us and we looked like two goobers trying to work the light and get him in posistion to shoot.
But Iagre with you, what secuence for what sounds .

Start off on volume 4 and if you dont see anything in 10-15 minutes crank it on up to 5. Sometimes the yotes come running quick so be ready. If there are bobcats in the area you may want to give it a little longer (25-30 minutes). They tend to take their time coming to the call.

But what sounds work the best to start and at what point wouold you change them to another ?

Start with bay bee cottontail and go to the much louder lightnin jack if nothing shows up. Thats what works the best for me. Good luck!

I use the adult cottontail and it gets good results. They come darting in, unfortunately, I haven't done my part to put a bullet in them...

Used the baby cottontail and a jackrabbit today, haven't seen anything.
Put ut some tuna by the pond, now going back to see if the coons will come out tonight .

How many stands did you make?

3 different stands , about 1/4 mile apart .
went back out tonight and started with the yote howls and such, got a lot of answers but nothing to come up.

I've had great luck with "lightning jack" right off the bat. I adjust the volume according to the wind, starting off fairly loud to get the "news" out then scale it back down. If within 10-15 minutes I don't get any results I'll lower the volume to full off for a min or two then change to "raspy woodpecker" or "baby cottontail" and gradually increase the volume again. As long as you're paying attention to the conditions, I don't think it can be "too loud".

The longest I've stayed on stand is about 45 minutes before going to a new area. Cats are tough (usually) and according to what I've been told will hang up and watch for quite a while, so be very still, watch the wind, and use your best camo. As one old timer told me, "if you're in an area where there are cats you can just about bet that when you're calling there's one watching you".

Damn is that what I am doing wrong??? I have a new FoxPro and I just let it run in short sperts. Should I let one sound just run for a few minutes (5-15 minutes)? Sorry I am new to yoty hunting.

I've heard the woodpecker and lucky bird are best for cats. Can anyone confirm this?

Woodpecker in distress has called in cats for me, it also works real good for coyotes in the warmer months. Seems like when its cold they prefer the cottontail distress. I usually run my for about 5 minutes then shut it down. That's enough to get most of the bold chargers.

Then I will switch to one of varmint al's calls - 16 min, fox/woodpecker, etc (unless I'm trying to call a cat)). They start w/ 2 min of silence, then play their sequence. I usually will spend another 15 minutes w/ his calls which is 1 or 2 sequences depending on call selected. Varmint Al's calls go up and down in volume by themselves.

If I'm calling cats I turn the call down a notch, call for another 5 minutes. Silent for 2-3, turn it down a notch, call for 5. Repeat for up to about 45 minutes.

Another thing you need to consider is that you need to be calling where the coyotes are - spend some time riding around in the evening listening for them so you will know where to set up. Coyotes can be called pretty much any time of day, but they will usually get fired up to go hunting w/ a bunch of howling right as the sun sets - thats when its easiest to locate them. Download one of Varmint Al's locater sirens to bring with you when you are locating them - a couple of minutes of the old timey siren usually will have the coyotes howling if they are anywhere around - they won't come to this call, and usually won't come to another call after the locater call in the same evening, this is to set you up for tomorrow's hunt!

Coyotes usually won't cover 3 or 4 miles to come to a call - just because you see coyotes on a piece of property doesn't mean that they are there all the time. You will really improve your odds by locating them and calling where you know they are in the evening or early morning.
