Quail Sightings - 05/18/21 10:22 PM

I live on the outskirts of town near Victoria Texas. This morning a pair of quail walked past my window and continued on towards the pasture.
This is a welcome sign for this year.

I saw a covey in town last week, it was surprising to see them since it is in an area that the homeless hangout.

Glad you have some Quail. In East Texas, I haven't heard one in the last 10 years.

Yep, if I saw a quail on my ranch I'd make him a sandwich or something but I'd never shoot it. Fire ants wiped them out here years ago.

Re: Quail Sightings - 09/05/21 09:30 PM

I saw another pair of Bobs walking down the road yesterday here in Victoria, Texas. I know this is a good sign.

Help me out on this one. Are they still paired up right now? Does it mean they have had multiple hatches, just curious since it is already September.

Also I hear a lot of calling in the background.

I have seen hatches later than this. A name was created for late hatches flushed during season. They were called bumblebees.

I’ve seen bumble bees first week of quail season.

Saw a male walk through my front yard about a month ago. I couldn't believe it, first one I have seen in Palo Pinto County since around 2001. There used to be a ton of them here when I was a kid (90's).

What happened to the wild bobwhite quail is sad.

Re: Quail Sightings - 10/28/21 12:18 PM

I've seen one bobwhite in ne texas but i'm not convinced that it was wild. They say it's habitat loss/non natives (bermuda) that has caused quail to disappear so that got me curious what mammals are native to bermuda. Turns out Bermuda doesn't have any mammals lol I guess it's all around bad except for a bovines.

Re: Quail Sightings - 11/03/21 06:50 PM

Finally made it to my place in dickens county and was anticipating a serious reduction in population. To my surprise I was blessed with a covey of 15 at my tree stand blind. Not sure if this is a reflection of a good population but it's at least as many as I had last year and will support some limited hunting for me and my best friend Riley.

I counted roughly 30 or so bob whites at my feeder and my buddy had a big covey of Blues at his on the other side of the Mesa from where I'm hunting. Heard a lot of whistling Saturday more to. (Mitchell county.)

My great Aunt at a place on the bay near Point Comfort. Back in the 70s the only reason you needed a dog was to find them after shooting. She also had almost as many rattlesnakes as quail.

It's been 25 years since I saw any quail in Lee County. I'd love to see them come back but I don't see that happening.

We will be hunting Ochiltree County, in the Panhandle this Saturday. It's our annual pheasant hunt.
We usually push a few coveys in the process.
