Snow in the Panhandle - 12/23/17 02:04 AM

Sitting in the trailer in Childress and there is >2” of snow on my truck and on the grass. The ground is still too Warm for it to stick.

I’m quail hunting go tomorrow at Matador... too bad the snow will not be around, I’ve never hunted in fresh snow before.

If you look at the Matador Wildlife Management Area - Texas Parks and Wildlife Facebook page. They have a pretty cool story, of a birddog being rescued from a sink hole.

Wife and I are in Childress also. We're from Michigan so the snow was no problem. We hit the Matador at 8:30 moved 4 covies by 12:30. We stopped at 6 birds. Our 10 year old, one eyed standard poodle was done in.

I ran into those guys right before noon and they were yelling about it.

The sinkhole is about 100 yards from the windmill where shorty dogleg and suitcase intersect

The dog is OK and hunting today, thanks to the VFD.

We tried a different area at sunrise this morning and got skunked.
By 11:00 most of the snow had burned off and we switched to a proven spot...One covey pointed and one busted in about an hour.

I swear this pup is part lab. Freezing, with snow on the ground, and he was swimming in the river.

Here is the thermometer at the sign in buildings at 6:30 this morning

This is the first time Rye has seen snow. It did not seem to phase him any.

Well, pics did not load. Let me host then In a different place and try again

Apparently it was not too cold for a quick swim in the Pease River

I've hunted that same section in that last pic. Tried to escape the wind there. We actually found blues there. They didn't hold at all...not that it mattered.

Cool pics

As of Saturday, that Sink Hole has not been fenced or well marked. There are a handful of tiny flags, like they use when locating utilities in your yard prior to digging, around the hole, but nothing that would stop another dog from going in. It is less than 3 yards from the road intersection just to the west of the windmill.
