Tennessee Reds

Tennessee Reds - 11/14/17 03:47 AM

I went and hunted the Austin Gun club. They had a group in there and turns out they're Brittney's didn't find over a twenty quail in the hunt. I thought I was going to clean up as usual. The owner was excited to tell me about the new quail she has. Said they are tougher and fly well.
My dog is two years old and holds well but she pushed a few coveys on the opener so I figured I'd work her a bit and make her hold on the stupid pen birds. Minutes out of the truck she stacks up 30 yards from some cedar. I take my time to her and notice she's ready to creep. I get there and release her. She trails 40 yards and stacks up. I couldn't believe it these quail were out only one day and were running like wild quail. This time she points and I come in fast like I do on wild birds. They flush 30 yards out and I miss with my skeet and imp cylinder chokes. I honestly should've went back and changed my chokes but I kept thinking pen birds. Every time she pointed them they ran 30 yards and flushed. There was no time to get around them. I got a few and found some lost chucker. Still not wild birds but it made it much more enjoyable. I'm a fan of Tennessee Red quail. I have them in a brine right now can't wait to taste them.

We used to use them in field trials. Good birds for sure.
