Did anyone quail hunt around Archer City last season? How was it last year? Any reports on that area for this year?
I called a rancher I use to season lease 10 years ago north of town to see if he would day lease last Dec, and he said the birds were better last year but not quite built back to where he wanted to allow hunting. Thought we might could push 7 or 8 coveys a day kind of thing was his estimate (he used to bird hunt a lot 20 years ago so pretty knowledgeable). I watch rainfall in that area pretty close and they have gotten quite a bit from early June on

Grew up in Archer and Wichita County. When I was a kid you didn't even need a dog most of the time. Love that area though. Hope it gets back to where it was long ago.
I hunted just south of Holliday last season and when we finally found the pattern, there were plenty of birds. Creeks and ditches in thicker area were the ticket.
Early July I drove through the country south of archer city, it was in really good shape. Lots of green. There was a Texas tech quail alliance sign at one of the ranch gates

I've heard the same thing from several ranchers, "Quail are making a come back, but not where I want to hunt them" I can't wrap my head around that comment.

""Quail are making a come back, but not where I want to hunt them"------- people that say that have no understanding of how quail breed and multiply. Leave 3 or 4 birds per covey and you will have the exact same amount next year as the ranch that killed none.
