Shells for upland hunting - 08/03/17 12:27 PM

I am taking my father on a Pheasant, Chucker and quail hunt at Prairies End in Sherman, I have never done one of these hunts and was wondering if anyone had advice on what size shot or shell to use to cover all three

Just my $0.02 #6 should do fine either 12 or 20 depending on how well you shoot. By your O.P. I'm guessing released birds.

#7.5 will knock down pheasant and kill some, but the overall performance is noticeably inferior to #5 shot. For a combo hunt, I'd follow the previous advice and go with #6.

x2

I have killed more pheasants with 7.5 than any other round. Anything bigger will tear those quail up.

I have hunted at prairies end a few times last spring.. first time I brough my normal prairie storm #5s I use on wild birds, big mistake. Your shots will be close and 7.5 shot will do just fine.

Open up that choke too. Pen raised pointed birds a skeet choke is pretty good.

I've used Cyl/IC in an out with good results.

My .02 yes 7 1/2 can and will kill Pheasants but they are tough birds. Pointed or not pin raised or wild
#5 golden pheasant by Fiocchi to get the job done right. You are paying a lot per bird so bring them down
With the first shot

There is a big difference between pen raised and wild. #5 golden pheasant is over kill. A bb hits a pen raised and they drop. Pen raised don't know to run and bury themselves in the grass so they're usually easy to find.
