Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/09/17 02:46 PM

Over on the Migratory board they ran a question about favorite water fowl gun. So what is your favorite upland gun. Mine is a Browning Citori 16 gauge.

An older Benelli M1 Super 90.

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/09/17 03:00 PM

Beretta 686 Onyx Pro 28ga because the O/U allows only 2 shots and for me everything other than leaving it in the case is a waste of shells.

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/09/17 03:00 PM

Old H&R Over & Under 12ga. that my mom bought my Dad in 1978 (I have the receipt, she paid $178) 26" barrel with imp cyl on top and modified on bottom. Stock has been shortened just a bit and has a nice Pachmeyer pad on it. I have several shotguns worth more but I have been shooting this one since 2004 and love it. I traded Dad an AMT stainless .30 carbine semi auto pistol for it back in 03 and then ended up getting the pistol back in July 2016 when dad passed. I would spend 10 times what the gun is worth to get it fixed if it ever broke.

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/09/17 03:34 PM

I was using a 20 ga. Browning Citori for the last 16 seasons. With as jumpy and skittish as the birds have gotten, I pulled my Winchester 101 12 ga. this season. It has made a noticeable difference. I/C over I/C.

Ruger Red Label 28 gauge O/U 26" barrels skeet/skeet. Had a 28" but went to the 26" - believe it or not it makes a difference in the thick stuff where the woodcock hang out.

I have 2 favorites. A Lanber 2098 12ga O/U with 28" bbls and a Franchi Alcione 20ga O/U 26" bbls.

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/09/17 04:56 PM

I have several I like to rotate but my current favorite two are:

LC Smith Field Grade 16 GA 26" barrels IC/Mod (I need to open up to SK/IC)

Benelli Ultra Light 20 GA 26" barrel I leave the IC choke in it most of the time.

But I am really wanting the new Browning A5 16 GA...a hunting buddy of mine got one and I got the chance to take a look a it last week...really nice balance, under 6 lbs...time to start saving! Or I could sell one of the other shotguns roflmao

I mostly shoot a 20ga Orion O/U for my upland hunting, but wouldn't mind giving one of those little RRL 28's a go.
Ran across one this weekend that was priced way to high imo. But dang, it sure does handle and feel nice. Seems almost perfect
for chasing around a pointing dog for bob's in West Tx. One of those will be on my radar if I ever come across a decent deal.

I have two current go to's.

First is my Remington 1100 16 gauge. Shoot it really well and I just love a 16 gauge for pheasants.

Second is my benelli legacy in 12 gauge. Nice light gun that fits me good, and attractive to boot.

Really wanting to make the jump to a SxS, been reading and learning all I can about them.

They are built on a smaller frame than the RL 12s and 20s. Very sought after and pricey now. I bought my 28" years ago at a gun show and sold it to buy the 26". I love mine it fits me just right and points like an extension of my arm.

When I really want to knock birds down I just can't miss with my benelli montefeltro. It' was made back when heckler and kotch partnered with benelli.

When I'm just working dogs on quail and not trying so hard to kill birds I like my Stoager Uplander sxs. It's got a 20g and a 28g interchangable barrel. I like the 20g.

My wife's Remington 20 gauge 11-87 Sportsman with mossy oak camo and a 26" barrel for quail. I have more expensive shotguns but I just love how that 11-87 fits me. I have an old 12 gauge Ithaca that is getting handed down to me that I love.

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/10/17 09:24 PM

I use either my O/U Ruger Red Label 20 gauge, or my 12 gauge Browning 725 Citori Sporting with the palm swelling and ported barrels. Those were my babies when I use to shoot in shooting competitions back in the day. I ordered a dozen different Briley chokes for each from skeet chockes all the way up to Improved mods and diffusers. I only use them hunting doves...I have never hunted quail or pheasant, but I would much like to.

But the fit and finish of a Belgium made Browning is second to none. They have their own beauty.

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/13/17 01:55 PM

A5s draw both lovers and haters. Dad had one back in the day and loved it. I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with it, and it felt clunky as heck to me. He had another in 12 gauge magnum - and it was a great turkey gun. The Belgian ones are definitely very well made.

I have a Belgian sweet 16, and a Jap light 20. I think both guns are of equal quality. I inherited the sweet 16 and bought the 20 in the 90's for $300 when Walmart quit carying Browning and clearanced them in Midland.

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/13/17 02:19 PM

From what I understand the new Sweet 16's are made in Portugal
The new A-5's are built different from the old ones or they at least they feel different to me, I like the new ones

Re: Favorite Hunting Shotgun - 01/13/17 04:18 PM

If you like the 28 gauge, take a look at the Rizzini models. I handled them at the DSC show and liked them greatly. I'm also a big fan of the 16 ga s/s, but don't currently own one, but maybe I'll fix that later this year. I also own and like my "Ugartechea SXS. English stock double triggers". It's a great handling gun.

The wife bought me a Browning 725 Citori in 20 gauge for Christmas. If work will ever let me have a weekend I think I'll try it on the quail birds. My Beretta Silver Pigeon just didn't fit that well and the 28 was heavier than my Red Label 28. More to follow
