Anyone hunt your dog one week out of spay?

Anyone hunt your dog one week out of spay? - 11/22/16 04:14 PM

Had my dog spayed last Friday. I finally get a few days to break away and hunt. It will 7 and 8 days after surgery. She never showed any signs of trouble after the surgery. I'm just worried she could get hurt. She's a 1year old GSP. Since the surgery she's pretty frazzled about staying inside. She wants to run so bad. I was thinking about just doing short loops with her and not pushing her to hard.

Actually I don't think she will hold back so yes she will run hard just not long.

I wouldn't but I'm no expert. Ask your vet.

No way. A mesquite thorn or a well place cactus thorn could be a disaster.

I'm a vet and there is Noooooooooo way I would recommend that. It's a recipe for disaster!!! 5-7 days post op is prime time for dehiscence, which can occur with NO predisposing factors. Letting a bird dog run and jump all day through the grass and brush will drastically increase the odds of swelling / inflammation at the surgery site. This is a bad thing. The only way I can imagine that a vet would say this is ok is that maybe they really don't know what a bird dog does while hunting.

Ok done, thank you pharmvet. I get it. I guess I'll just go deer hunting.. Coco will have to stay home. All I want to do is birdhunt these days.

I lost a good jip that got loose and torn something loose inside several days after the procedure. Didn't think anything about it when I went to put her up. Found her dead next morning.

Yup I'm glad I held off. I'll be headed up to the panhandle today and hunting all weekend. She's been penned up for over a week. I hope she doesn't catch the grass on fire out of that dog box:)
