Quail populations on the rebound

Quail populations on the rebound - 08/09/16 09:29 PM

Some great news to hear!

Quote:
Four years ago, Dr. Dale Rollins of the Rolling Plains Quail Institute near San Angelo was saying that quail numbers were at a level where hunting them should be halted.

The word extinction was applied to a very serious quail decline. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and Rollins were looking at several factors which may have caused the rapid drop in bobwhite and blue quail numbers across West Texas and in the Rolling Plains.

Rollins detected eye parasites in some of the birds he tested. TPWD biologists were honed in on habitat and the depletion of nesting areas for the birds. As it turned out, the worst culprit was probably drought conditions and the lack of carry-over hatches from previous years.

That late hatch perez predicted is most likely gone, no rain and high temperatures stop quail from hatching and nesting

This is old news. 2014 and 2015 were great years for us while shooting approximately 750 and 1200 wild bobwhites respectively. I would expect that to be the case this year as well.

That is all supposed to change come Saturday. Steady rain chances for over a week and highs in the low to mid 90s. Think it's still too late even if the weather changes this weekend? Us young bucks have to turn to you older, I mean wiser, fellows for this kind of stuff.

I believe we still have time, but last year was close to perfect temperature wise and very good with moisture. If we have 50% of the quail we had last year it will still b a very good year. Right now I am not seeing gloom and doom because a lot of thing were perfect until mid june.

"""Dr. Dale Rollins of the Rolling Plains Quail Institute near San Angelo""---------------- classic bureaucratic intellectual that is clueless how the real world works.
"" The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and Rollins were looking at several factors""--------- and the clueless gov workers believe him . -----------sigh------

I was out in the field last month, and you could hear a lot of quail calling.
I still have hopes of it being a good year, and rain is in the forecast.

Talked to a resident north of Abilene yesterday. Chicks, hens and rooster are everywhere. Every where.
It will be another great, even greater year.

Celebrate.

I was very happy to see a pair of bobwhites in my neighborhood just outside of Austin a day ago. I did not see any young birds with the two adults. Shouldn't there have been young birds at this time of the year?

If you know or had ever met Dale Rollins you would not be saying that...

This may possibly be the best year I've ever witnessed in this area and I've seen some damn good years.

Tigger I'm seeing thumb size Blue's and Bob's, pretty sure we had another round out here. While we did have a dry spell there were lot's of bug's and seed to keep them going and plenty of water still standing in the low area's and ponds have been full. As I said earlier this may vedry well be the best year I've ever seen.
