Anyone hunt quail with a 410 any more? My favorite shotgun.

I got invited to hunt on a lease that Nolan Ryan was on. We didn't hut together but our paths crossed. He hunted with a 410. He didn't miss many.

But quail were the order of the day. And over the next several hours, Annie pointed 14 coveys; eight were bobwhites and six were blues. And while the shooting wasn’t a perfect game, it was an above average display of shotgunning. Ryan carried an over/under .410 and Mr. Wells toted a 28-gauge over/under. On one particular covey rise, each downed two birds, which is about all you can expect from a double-gun. The record as far as I’m concerned is shared by my colleague Billy Higginbotham and running buddy from high school Rodney Heflin, who each downed five bobwhites on the wing in two successive shots. And I’m not taking their word for it (especially not from these characters!); I witnessed both incidents.

Great story Bill and thanks for sharing. My favored gun these days is my Remington 1148 in 28 ga.

When did that happen Bill?

I shot my first quail with a .410 and I learned how to shoot with one as well. Love em.

I have a Md 42 Winchester with a Mod. barrel. I need to send it off to have it worked on and a plug added. The slide sticks in the open position, looking forward to dove hunting with it.

I have used a supervise super light for years. Started in 1980 with it new. They weren't that expensive back then. Pulled it out for the first time in years this year. Having a blast.

I have a 28ga /.410 combo. The only time I will have the 28ga barrel on for quail is if a good % of Blues are mixed in. Also shot 4 limits of dove this first split with the .410....but that had a ton more to do with the number of birds on those hunts vs the shooter's ability.

Sounds crazy, but I seem to focus more and shoot better with the smaller bore.

I have a Beretta Pigeon in .410 bore that I have used on both bobs and dove.
With a 3" shell and no. 6 shot, it's pretty deadly on both.

Normally, I shoot a 28 ga. on bobs and a 20 on blues and dove.
