Pheasant Advice - 12/17/15 04:45 AM

Looking at doing a trip next fall with a guide, what state is best? Any recommendations on outfitters? I have never been, what should I expect? Thanks in advance!

Redfield, South Dakota area for wild birds. If you want planted birds, try http://www.serengetigameranch.com/. They are in Comfort, Tx.

Go shoot a wild bird, then shoot a released bird, then tell me the difference. A pheasant becomes wild the moment its released. I personally am not spending $2K without getting my 5 birds per day.
I would highly recommend Shattuck Hunting in Gregory SD. Top shelf operation.

Nebraska and Iowa also have great bird populations. I would look at eastern Nebraska and western Iowa

My advice and a own a ranch with pheasants.

Look at state bag limits then look at preserve limits.

Figure drive costs, lodging, lic etc and divide by state limit.....

Then do the same for a preserve.

Drought has really hurt wild birds in Kansas in last few years. South Dakota would be the place to go.

If you've never done this, then expect a lot of walking! Make sure your boots are broken in and up to the task. Also, might want to consider putting those sling studs/swivels to use. Walking 5-8 miles a day carrying a gun in your hands, on your shoulders or broken on your forearm gets old quick. Last, dont expect the birds to sit tight to the point, or until you get to the point.....I have half a dozen of these hunts in TX and KS under my belt and while some were better than others, the birds almost always jumped further out than what we expected.....lot of birds fell from 30-40 yards out. These were not outfitter hunts....just hunts on farm/crop land in "high" pheasant areas. Good luck on your trip and please post upon your return!

And if you don't walk miles every week, start doing it long before the hunt.
Lots of birds, good shooting, and you could finish up early. Lack of either, and you could be walking most of the day.
