I just posted this on the OT. Have any stories?

Brittany's are generally smart but a dog that likes to go after skunks just lik to go after them I think. Had one years ago that if he came across a skunk it was his job to kill it, or at least it seamed that way.

The Brittnay I have now has had several baths with the mixture for skunks but I think he just runs by them too close sometimes. He hasn't gotten sprayed in nearly 2 years so hopefully he has learned, I think it is the long baths he hates more than the skunks.

Cracker always backs but she will blink a skunk point.

Years ago I had a Riggins White Knight female pup named Billie Sue and while guiding a couple of Doctors up in the Panhandle this little girl pointed a clump of brush right out in an open area. One of the Drs had not killed a bird all morning and he said " this one is mine" He walked up and kicked the brush and when he did , he kicked a skunk right in the buttock . It's needless to say, that he rode the rest of the day with his right leg hanging out of my jeep. Incidentally he was a gynecologist. I don't know the rest of the story about how he fared at the clinic the next day but these guys never hunted with me again. I didn't get a tip either. LOL

One of my friend's red setters got skunked so bad he had fits and had to go to the vet.

My ole hunting buddy had several different Brits over the years and I think they all got skunked more than one. He always treated them with a tomato juice bath. Not sure it worked all that well though. Sure made for a long ride home in the Jeep Wagonneer. I've never had a problem with skunks, but every dog I've had has had its bout with porcupines. I left a quill in the chest of a shorthair one time and it got infected big time. He treated the absess with a medicated gauze, it dripped puss for several days. It looked like a turkey beard protruding from his chest. It finally got well. I hate those dang things and kill everyone I encounter.

Some years ago, I had a nice Pork Roll female pointer that would not leave the skunks alone. She had gotten mad at them and was hunting them down to kill. Needless to say, there were many baths involved and a lot of frustration on my part. She and I then had a "come to Jesus" meeting one morning after she killed one. It was tough, but necessary. That afternoon, she ran from the next skunk she encountered never to make contact with another one for the next 11 years of her life.

Cash has gotten sprayed once, and that was enough for him to back away from skunks now.
Lucy,and June are a different story.
They still continue to go after skunks, even after taking a direct spray to the face.

Don't think I've seen my dogs point them but they have gotten in the yard from time to time. One dog never learned and has taken several direct sprays to the face. The other dog is better at moving around the skunk as to not get sprayed and picks his spot when going in for the kill

What do you use to get the skunk smell off

Cast in OT said that TSC has a soap that worked wonders.

Negatory Bill. The solution of 1 qt hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 2 teaspoons Dawn, 2 qt warm water is what works. Rinse dog or wash if dirty with regular stuff then rinse and then apply solution and lather dog up. Let sit on dog couple minutes, rinse. Works great.

Had a dog get skunked in the middle of a trip last season. When we came in for lunch, I asked if the hunting camp might have some tomato juice. All they could come up with was bloody mary mixer, and that made the dog bearable to be around, but just barely. My hunting bag, where I store collars, whistles, GPS hand-held, all smelled like skunk for probably the rest of the season, despite my wiping stuff down after every outing. What a mess!

I have used this many times, and it works great on the dogs.
I just wish it worked as well on the collars.

Collars are cheap.

Not the ecollars, and they will have hint of skunk for a good month.

I gotta cowboy buddy who loves to rope steers and hunt quail. He's always run shorthairs.
Years ago, we were out near Albany hunting the old Bradford place when Dolly, his GSP at the time, goes on rock solid.
I said, "Look, Kent, Dolly's locked up!"
He replied "That don't look like no bird point to me."

It wasn't.

In a flash, Dolly stuck her whole face down in a mountain of prickly pear and drug out Pepe' Le Pew.
Kent was hollering "NO, DOLLY, NO!!"
I look at Dolly, she's got a face full of barbs and she's shaking the shingus out of this skunk..I'm backing WAY up 'cause skunk pizz is flyin'.
Kent's hammering on the controller, all to no avail.

Finally, she drops the skunk and we evacuate the effected area.
She stunk like .... for the rest of the day.

Funny thing was, she kept pointing quail through the smell of that skunk pee. She even found a dead bird that had fallen out of my bag earlier.
I was amazed.
Turned out that Dolly had a thing for the skunk. Kent said she killed one on every lease they hunted.

Never forget that one.

I've got a Irish/red setter that loves killing skunks. Three years ago he killed an armadillo, a possum, and six skunks, all in my two acre back yard. The next year armadillos and possums went off the menu but killed another six skunks. This year only two. Well he's about eleven or twelve years old and sleeps a lot now. Because of this bad habit he is an outside dog only. Sometimes I think he thinks that skunk smell is male dog cologne. I'm glad he is slowing down as I am tired of being on the dead skunk burial detail.
