Photos of Why We Do It - 03/21/15 02:25 PM

I don't know about you all, but I am already down in the dumps because quail season is over and the wait for next season has begun. We recently had a thread describing our "point of the season" of which we had a great response on this subject. With that being said, let's post more photos of our dogs in action in the field...the ones that inspire you to keep doing this passion of upland bird hunting year after year, some with odds seemingly against you. I will start with these.....

Because of having a litter, I only got to make one hunt this season. It was a good hunt though, we found 3 covies and a few singles in less than a couple hours.

Wish my billfold and knees would take it and I'd be right back in the thick of things. Someday! They better never let me win the lottery. Most of my old hunting buddies are chasing dogs in heaven. I hunted with a bunch of old men all my life and they are all gone. Wish I would have made some friends my own age to hunt with.

For now I will vicariously through y'alls pics and remember days gone by. Someday I think I'll buy me one of those ATVs and some more dogs...... Someday.

I'll give y'all a mental image. It's therapeutic. It makes the world go away for a while. Watching a dog do what it was bred to do is a sight to behold. It does the same for me now as it did 40 years ago. I can think of only one other thing that does that. grin

Re: Photos of Why We Do It - 03/26/15 12:51 PM

Puts a smile on my face every time I look at it. it was taken with a phone and I have yet to try and burn it to a disk and get a print. Back story is the dog pointing the covey is a 1 year old female that belongs to coonie on the board. She turned out to be a real natural bird dog. Has a bunch of desire and at one point I was told they stopped hunting one afternoon early to go shoot some dove. They tied her to the trailer and went a ways to the spot they were going to hunt. She chewed her way through the rope and joined them and retrieved dove for them for an hour or so. She's truly one of the things that keeps us doing it.

I never take enough pictures. I realize that every time I lose a dog or want to post on a thread like this. These are just some random ones I had on my computer at work for some reason or another. They range from Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas as near as I can tell. Just moved to Texas for work and will be here for about three years. Very new to the pay to pay and looking for a place to train and hunt that I won't have to get a 2nd mortgage to make it happen. I have another pup coming to the kennels in June so hopefully I have that figured by then.

Here are some older picks, 1998 through about 2005, many of them are because of the backdrop or the memory.
First two are of the best dog I ever owned, out of Elhew Damascus like Sadie is

Buck pointed this covey on a hilltop before any of us had our vests on:

10 year old when he was 8 mos old:

My dads best dog out of buck, toughest hardest hunting female I have ever hunted with

75 pheasants about to boil out on this South Dakota hilltop in front of my early 90s dog Jake

Re: Photos of Why We Do - 04/01/15 11:05 AM

My setters are Hytest and Grouse Ridge bloodlines. I have had an amazing run for 20 years with the Grouse Ridge bloodline. They just aim to please and are bird finding machines.

Great pics Somebeach, welcome to Texas and to the THF. Texas sucks from the perspective of 99.9% private land, constrained resource, and guys with means that drive up the price of poker when birds are lean. Hoping the birds come back strong where the economics will get a bit more reasonable for all.

They can be pointed in Texas too, just not for long. A blue quail only has two things on its' mind....That is leaving or getting ready to leave.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. It sure is a different expieriance of wondering which hunting spot you will try that day to looking for one you can afford! Setters appear more common in Texas than I imagined. I just moved from New Mexico where I lived for a year and i think I had the only setters in the state!

Hi, I'm new to the site but thought I should share some pictures of my Red Dog. This is John Wayne training in the fall. He is only a year old so this upcoming season will be his first to do real hunts.

I look forward to getting to know everyone on THF. If anyone needs a hunting partner let me know!

I got this dog from the first litter out of National Champion Whipporwill's Wildcard after he won at Ames. He has been gone awhile now but he was a joy to run and hunt behind. He stayed in birds even in some lean years. He was a great foot hunting dog but I could hit the whistle 3 times and you could watch him fade over that far hill. I ran him in several AA events but I could not keep him broke to w&s.

Looking at these photos, if I even thought there was a chance I could find a dang quail lease close enough to Austin to hunt, I'd get back into training LLewellins, but not living in Odessa anymore.. don't know if it would be worth wasting a perfectly good dog on just a family pet frown

Beautiful pictures guys. I think all I have left for pics are the ones on my coffee cups...

This is Luke. He is 5 yrs old. He loves to go to the farm in Collingsworth County. We were there this week and I have never seen so many pairs of Bobs. They are calling all day long. Since January we have had 17 inches of moisture. It's as green as its been in many years.

Lol that tail reminds me of a story my buddy told about his dog on a hunt one time. He said that his dog would point his tail in the direction the covey was going to flush - left or right. When birds would burst out in all directions he would say "See there!" smile
