I never missed opening or last weekend for years. Then I did. My plans are to make my last quail hunt of the season Wednesday. Is it still special to you? What are your plans?

Unless something drastic happens, my last hunt was in encinco week before last. Enjoyed a couple of days with my son. Was glad we got into birds.

Re: Last weekend - 02/16/15 01:03 AM

They finally quit deer hunting on my type II deer lease. Kept hearing the deer hunters talk about all the quail they were seeing. Drove and walked a lot of that 2400 acres, never saw a quail and never heard a whistle. Meadow Larks you think??? bang
Also Zeke the GSP wouldn't get 50 yards away. Too many years as house dog and no field time. I have a pointer pup coming next month and Bill O put me on to a good trainer. I have a lease for next year so no pointing house dog. laugh

Bill
Its hit or miss on if I will do one more wild hunt. I will be running Cash for customers on a canned pheasant hunt Friday. Scott won't get a medical release to shoot until next month.

Doing a pen raised shoot for a charity, I will never call pen raised a hunt.

Re: Last weekend - 02/16/15 01:25 AM

Our last weekend was this one. Made one last run to Oklahoma. Hot and dry is all I can give for a report. I think we killed three birds (Hunted Saturday 4 hrs & Sunday 3 hrs) Still one of our best seasons in years, our dogs had over 100 wild birds killed over them this season (retrieved 91 - lost more than 9 - plus there was 30 (If I remember correctly) pen raised birds killed over them at Walters place. Hope someone can get out and get em for this last weekend in Texas. I'll be working on next season.

Re: Last weekend - 02/16/15 02:54 AM

We ended snipe season this afternoon with a limit. It was a good season.

Quail season for me ends next Sat. I'm taking an 85 yr old friend of mine, and his 14 yr old Brittany. We'll see how it goes; but it should be special. I'm planning to be pointing a camera more than a gun.

Re: Last weekend - 02/16/15 03:32 AM

I wanted to make it to Oklahoma before Quail season ended up there, but too many things going on to take enough time away to go where I know there are birds. Still don't have quail anymore on our lease in young county and don't have any places to hunt public in Texas, so Quail season is pretty much over for me. In fact never started for me either. bang Season ended for me today also with a Snipe hunt. Posted the day live in the dog forum and dragged the day out for my 8 birds enjoying the nice weather before the front. I took a break with Dash for a season with him only getting some on the job training, but now it is time to think about getting him back on track with some more formal pointing dog training.

That's enough birds to make a bird dog.

Re: Last weekend - 02/17/15 10:52 PM

Opening weekend isn't necessarily all that important to me because of the fact that it's usually too hot for the dogs and I can just shoot ducks that weekend. However on the last weekend my dad and I always go out out and have since I was about 5 years old. It's kind of like the last hoorah for us since we aren't that big into turkey hunting or predator hunting. Its a long time until september dove for me and even longer for my dad because he doesn't hunt anything but quail. I always have enjoyed the last day; it's a bitter sweet time.

Duck, a couple guys on the Pointing Dog Journal web site just returned to KS from a hunt in that area. Did really well. Hope you do as well

Duckbill, I hunted west of Coleman last week and did really well. Hunted a little east of Coleman the second day, and it was not nearly as good.

Re: Last weekend - 02/19/15 01:11 AM

Great news! Been a lot of birds out there this year. Quite a few limits.

Re: Last weekend - 02/20/15 01:12 AM

I'll be hunting east of Kingsville, and south of Corpus Christi all weekend. Have done really well out there this year.

Need everyone to be careful of the rattlebugs this weekend, they are beginning to show up pretty regular.

Re: Last weekend - 02/20/15 07:08 PM

I hunted today, found 10 coveys on a great place, I plan to hunt tomorrow morning on a marginal place(hope to find 4 or 5 coveys). This is my first year with my own dog, so Im trying to get as much in as possible.

Re: Last weekend - 02/20/15 07:13 PM

I finished this morning on a new pasture. The pasture looked good from the road. We found our first covey within 10 minutes and that was it. The pasture needs grazing. Too much coastal.

Re: Last weekend - 02/20/15 07:28 PM

I'm headed to Shackelford Co. here in about 2 hours to hunt the weekend. Hopefully the wind stays below hurricane force and I make it out before the ice/snow hits Sunday afternoon and we should be able to find some birds. They have been pretty consistent out there this year but we've been hampered by wind/weather on a couple of hunts.

Re: Last weekend - 02/21/15 10:25 PM

I just got a first hand report by email from south of Victoria. It read 23 coveys by noon.

Re: Last weekend - 02/22/15 04:00 AM

our best day was 45 coveys. Fingers crossed we have a repeat of last spring.

Re: Last weekend - 02/22/15 02:34 PM

My last hunt was yesterday. Local landowner gave me access to some nice pastures. Had a great time and the dogs did great considering the conditions, there wasnt even any dew on the ground at sunrise with the 30mph winds. Hunted three hours and found 3 coveys, harvested 6birds.

Magspa, now those are a couple of really cool pics right there. I know that it involves more than just the camera, but out of curiosity, what camera brand, model, etc, are you using?

My buddy took them with his iphone

Re: Last weekend - 02/23/15 11:26 AM

Hunted near Shamrock the last weekend of season. Had a solid first day with great dog work, and then only found a couple of coveys yesterday in the sleet and 30mph wind...came to senses about 11:30 and got on the road. All nice sized coveys, encouraged for next year, hopefully birds continue to rebound so I can talk momma danceswithquail into letting me get a new pup (b#%tching about no birds for three years dug myself into a hole on that). Few pics attached. Last pic is probably the closest I have ever been on wild birds to a dog straight into face and actually had a camera, slam and turn less than 10 yds looking right at me, 15 bird covey in between us took one step and they exploded all around me.

Hey Dances, just put your foot down and tell her by God I'm getting a bird dog puppy whether you like it or not!! Just be sure like I was that she was at the store or something. Then you can say, I told you I was getting a pup bolt
And yes I'm whip

Re: Last weekend - 02/23/15 08:53 PM

Excellent pictures.
We did a hunt Sunday, my husband was driving the UTV, so I put him in charge of the camera.
Needless to say I only have pictures of some ducks resting on the pond, and my dog with daughters boyfriend posing with the quail after the hunt.
I think he wants to be fired from being camera man.
The dog found 5 coveys, and we took 9 birds.

Nice pen raised shoot, good people, good food, good whiskey, and nice dog work and shooting. Good exercise for dogs.

Yes it does.
We hunted wild quail on Sunday, but Friday I ran the dog on pen raised birds for customers.
Both days beat the snot out of staying home.
