First Woodcock Hunt - 12/31/14 12:51 AM

.....for me this year. Jenny worked great but only two points and one bird down after covering quite a bit of ground. Still great to be woodcock hunting again. Looking forward to January.

Used to hunt this place In mills county it was Feral native grass land and had a series of terraces running down through a valley in years the terraces held water that place was loaded with woodcock and snipe you could get a limit any day of the season. Really fun birds to hunt.

Cool. I have seen a couple on accident. How do you hunt them? What type of habitat do they live in?

I use my GSP Jenny. Basically just hit the woods and hunt them. Likely spots in my area are yaupon thickets, drainages, canebrakes, etc. But, as they always say, they are where you find them. smile

I have found areas that have a lot of cat tails will hold some birds. Hard birds to hit I know that will normally try and scare the crap out of you when they take off and fly in zig zags. Had one last year got seven rounds before I hit it it kept circleing around and landing further up finally knocked it down my buddy said that is a high dollar bite of food. But hey it's fun and they are great to eat. Great pics by the way

Made it out yesterday and found some birds in the morning. Had numerous flushes (some might have been re-flushes) and bagged 1 bird. They were getting up about 10 yards in front of me. Had lots of fun chasing them.

By late morning the wind blew in and nothing for the rest of the day, so called it quits early.

Sorry the picture isn't better as it was taken on a basic cell phone. It really shows how well they blend in with the forest floor....

Second hunt down. Mirror image of the first. Two points, 4 birds, one bird to hand. Didn't even get a shot off on one of the points. Biggest bird I've ever taken though so I'm saving it for future taxidermy.

I plan to. I have another frozen and may do a double flying mount.

I will be sure and not take them anywhere near your crow-sized monster timberdoodle. smile

Wonderful day today! 4 solid points and a limit in 2 hours. Such a joy and privilege to watch Jenny do her thing.

Re: First Woodcock Hunt - 01/26/15 07:30 PM

Awesome pic! I hunted yesterday for several hours and didn't see a single bird. My first choice for spot was flooded out so I had to try some new areas. Great weather, but a little bummed I didn't even see one bird.
