Lets hear your duck band count, and any duck band stories you wish to post...

I got one, the duck gods were on my side that day, 2007/08 seasons hunting public a metromess lake! It was the only duck I shot that day!

Re: Let's hear your Band Count!! - 11/17/09 02:06 AM

Banded ducks = 0, Banded snow goose = 1

Back in highschool we had access to a friend of ours place that had some corn fields. We had a few big rains and some parts of the fields were flooded, so we decided to skip out on hunting my place and head to theirs for a change of scenery. I think that was quite possibly the BEST hunt of my life. Four limits of ducks (only time I have ever shot a full limit of greenheads), and four limits of snow geese. First goose I dropped was banded. Never will forget it. I wish I would have had enough sense to take pictures of that hunt back then, but the memory is more than vivid still.

Re: Let's hear your Band Count!! - 11/17/09 02:14 AM

7 mallards
2 woodies
7 canadas.

The ducks were all shot in the same season in California, on the same hunt club where i did a banding project the previous summer. I banded three of the mallards i shot. rofl The rest were banded in previous years in the same general area, so I really don't consider them "trophies" but they still look good on the lanyard. Especially the 2 $100 reward bands nuts

The geese were shot over 3 years in Michigan. Most of them came from the Hudson bay.

Re: Let's hear your Band Count!! - 11/17/09 02:21 AM

I have been lucky so far in my young waterfowling career. I have 2 bands so far in 3 years. The first was a banded mottle duck that came 3 years ago on the last weekend of the season. I didnt even realize that the bird was banded till the end of the hunt. It was taken at the Anahuac Wildlife Refuge. At the time I dont think I realized how speacial that was and didnt even get it mounted but did get a couple of pics.

My second band came from a banded redhead that was taken out of Rockport last January on the last weekend of the season. The bird was taken out of a group of over a hundred redheads. This time I realized how speacial the bands are and got this one mounted. The only thing that I was upset about is that the band was to old and worn out to get any information off of.

Re: Let's hear your Band Count!! - 11/17/09 01:50 PM

I have two, both woodies. The last one I killed while taking my wife's cousin for his first duck hunt. We sat on a beaver pond, that is about a mile walk, for three hours. We seen some come and go but not close enough to shoot. It's about a 60 acre pond.
When we got ready to leave he wanted to shoot and just see what would get off the water. He fired one shot and three woodies got up about 150 yards away and started flying straight at us. scratch when they got close enough I dropped the one on the right and dropped the one on the left. Mine was banded. woot Talk about dumb luck right.

Re: Let's hear your Band Count!! - 11/17/09 02:17 PM

I don't know how many but I am guessing in the 20s. I always gave them away or had them taken away. I shot a double on two geese and both were banded with $100 reward bands. It was a video shoot and I waas a guest that did not have to pay to hunt. We hammered the snot out of the geese but the guides took my bands. I just didn't feel right about creating a stink. The others were givin to the customers when I was doing guide service. That just aint for me anymore, believe me it gets old. I have one that is cherished. It was a banded woodroe killed on the ranch I am going to this weekend. It was just me and bull hunting and he dove under water for about 20 seconds to get the bird. So nopbody could throw a hissy about that band.

18 years of duck hunting, 3 bands the last five years. Wood duck in Athens, Teal in Gueydon,La., and a Mallard in Ok last year. Me and my group kill 300-460 ducks per year and have 5 bands between us all the last 5 years. Its not easy.

WHen I was a kid I used to hunt with my buddies dad at College Port. The lease was called "Webfoot" It was like 40k acres or something and it backed up to mad Island NWR. We used to have blinds built on the fence line of Mad island. On a good morning, we would literally pick out the banded snows to shoot. Never did see a neck band back in the mid 80's. Anyway that friend died in a motorcyle wreck several years ago, and I put my lanyard with all my bands on it in his casket.

Snow goose = 53
Ducks = 0

3 Bands.

First was a snow goose that was 13 years old.
Next was a Mottled Duck drake.
And the last was a Speckledbelly goose.

I have been on hunts where banded birds were shot in the group. One was a Mallard drake, a Redhead drake, a Redhead hen and a Mottled duck drake.

My ultimate trophy would be a banded Ruddy duck. laugh
