Ark next year

Hey guys,

looking for suggestions for a flooded timber hunt in Arkansas next year. Any guides/outfitter recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Since I'll be buying an out of state license will also look into going up there for a conservation snow hunt. Any guides/outfitters recommendations for snows?

Basically beware of anyone that guarantees flooded timber unless they have means of pumping water.

I would want an outfitter that has access to fields as well if you are wanting to kill birds. First time we went we insisted on the green timber experience and didn’t shoot much.

You get what you pay for with an outfitter there. There are guides everywhere that will take you on public property, through out a few decoys, and then scare away half the ducks with their calling.

If you plan a hunt way out which you will have to do with a guide. They may be in the timber they may be in the fields. Depends on weather and food etc.

If you wanna kill timber ducks watch the weather hook up to the boat and take off. You'll eventually figure it out.

thanks guys, that probably why most the hunts i'm seeing are morning timber hunts with an afternoon rice field hunt.

I hunted in Lonoke last year which is about 30 miles from Stuttgart and we had great success. I wouldn't limit yourself to just timber hunts though unless that is what your heart is set on. We hunted a retired catfish farm that was converted to waterfowl impoundments. We shot over 140 ducks over our 2 days and could have easily killed another 140 had we not limited out. There were geese everywhere and you could have easily set up an additional afternoon hunt. If you look at the satellite image of the area you will see tons of these minnow farms that many have been converted to duck hunting spots. This would open up a larger number of outfitters and still give you some great hunts.

Let us know how it goes as it is some of the best hunting I have experienced.

I am hoping to make it up to Stuttgart this year to hunt with a buddy who is from there. Have had to cancel the past two years with the Clarendon river being way too low to flood their timber/fields.

You will get what you pay for the majority of the time, especially with guided duck hunts. Most of the legendary, large acreage places that are open to day/weekend hunts are probably already booked. Take the others advice on trying to do a timber/field combo. There's more to it than going to Arkansas, standing in flooded oaks and mallards come pouring in. Unless you are dead set on hunting flooded timber.

About 20 yrs. ago, we went on "Timber Hunts" in The Bayou Meto WMA w/ Guides for (4 Seasons in a row) and Try to Book your Timber Hunts in Late Dec. or January. Those seem to be the BEST times because that gives the birds a chance to get down there. We went 1 of those yrs. in late November- Right after T'Giving and the Birds had not got down there yet. Good Luck and try to Find an Outfitter that offers both Timber & Field hunts. I would try to Help you w/ a Guide, but the one's we used are out of Business. Sorry!

I grew up near Stuttgart. I only hunted flooded timber. I could tame a mallard. This string was from that area.

Timber hunt is on my bucket list, good luck

Thanks guys, timber is defiantly what I'm wanting to do. I've had a lot of great hunts in Texas over fields and water, just no real green timber hunts. Yes the hunt will be late December at the earliest. Keep the guides/outfitters recommendations coming.

On a side note, has anyone hunted with Bigwoods on the Trinity? They seem to be an option for a true Texas green timber hunt.

most of the places you see in texas doing "flooded timber" are strictly reliant upon rivers and creeks coming out of their banks. I could be wrong, but I think the impoundments at big woods are open flats, but they do have other natural sloughs, ponds, etc. They all advertise it, but most of the time it is an oxbow or slough surrounded by trees and advertised as timber hunting. Some even advertise flooded bushes as flooded timber. There are also some good opportunities in Mississippi and Tennessee.
