For some reason that never crossed my mind. The pic looks like there is some blue on the bill, but I didn't notice that at the time. Crap, now I gotta dig that carcass out of the trash and take a better look.
In a hurry to head to the lease, will have my son do it later. Will report back...
Hmmm, since it only has blue on the sides of the bill (not the whole thing) and there are no larger white patches in the speculum, there is a very good chance it could actually be Pintail X GWT. It would explain the very slight differences in wing patches since pintail have very similar ones.

Look at my sig pic for comparison.
You got a point because the widgeon bill is blue all the way over the top. Your duck's bill blue patch more rembles a pintail beak.

It's a wigeon x green wing. A friend of mine shot a pintail x green wing and it looked quite a bit different.

At first glance I thought so too. THat blue on the bill does not go over the top, at least I don't think so anyway. That would give a grand clue in the pintail direction.

How would a pintail/gwt Drake get such a light colored head?
WHo knows? But the same question is how did he ge the blue patch just like a pintail? Again, who knows. If you ever seen ducks making new ducks, you would think it had 5 different fathers.

Nope it is exactly like a sprig. And the speculum looks more like a sprig, too.
Not sure why the head wouldn't be darker tho, that part is throwing me off and definitely seems more wigeon.
