Duck blind opinions.

I've been toying with the idea of making an 18ft long skid blind that would go in the middle of a 20acre pond that varys from a ft deep to 2ft deep. I'm worried that the blind will flare birds even with adequate brushing in. The other option I've been thinking about is to make 5 to 6 single man blinds to break up the silhouette. What are some of y'alls experience with larger skid blinds and how birds react to them?

From my experience you should be fine but the problem with the middle of a pond is you will want to be able to look or shoot out of all sides and you'll have sunlight coming through and lighting up the inside of the blind and silhouetting you.

If you are going to have a fixed position blind looks for a place where you can put your back to the rising sun and take into account the prevailing or north wind to at least set up for a crossing approach for decoying birds. For this reason having 2-3 different blind placements may be better to take advantage of changing weather conditions and flight patterns.

The blind would be facing southwest with the goal being to catch them in a crossing pattern on north wind days. As far as openings in the blind I was gonna have 5 fixed shooting slots that go from the front of the blind to the back allowing us to also hunt a south wind.The slots will be separated by 12in of cattle panel that would be well concealed with palmetto fronds that a shooter could slip in and out of with ease.

Unless your just wanting a single large blind to be more comfortable and social, low profile individual skids for layout blinds would make for better hunting. Or better yet, have both.

This, if you want to kill birds. What would be awesome, 18' x 8' floating blind, with permanent layouts built in, all grassed up. You really don't need coffin like layouts with doors etc.. just a back rest, you got it all grassed up, maybe burlap with grass tied to it to pull over your feet, face mask gloves you are camoed fine. Make the back rest just at the right angle so you can drink your coffee.

So something along the lines of my original plans just low profile. What I have in mind would shave about 3ft off the height.

I built a blind based on Dr. Duck design... Pretty low provide, this design was originally for a boat.




Mine was 6 ft x 12 ft.







I built it held together with screws, so I could break it down and move it, which I did 3 times.

Here is an example of what I was talking about, permanent layout blind. This is for 2 people and a dog. Grass this up on skids, would be awesome.

If the size of the structure was going to scare ducks then no one on the coast would ever kill a duck, they make them to park the boat in and then get out and sit down. I would be a lot more concerned about movement than the size of the blind.

This is basiclly what I was originally thinking but having a metal frame elevated 18in off the ground. I was gonna have 30 in wide slots running from the front to back that a shooter could pop in and out of.



I'm leaning toward keeping the same idea but making it into a 5 man layout blind that would resemble the boat blind above.
