How do you start the conversation with a landowner?

When you ask permission to hunt a spot for ducks on their land?

Do y'all just call them up and say, "Hey I'm some guy that duck hunts. I saw some ducks flying over on your place. You mind if I go shoot at em?"

That's how I feel I'll come off with every conversation I go through in my head.

"I like ducks - do you like ducks?"

"Can we share them der ducks?"

"I got some duck sausage for you to try"

60% of the time; it works 100% of the time...

This isn't just someone's farm or home place. Big landowner with lots of acreage across the county growing timber.

Walk up and say " Hey wanna grab a drink, Ill buy? If he says no, then jump to the point and say "I was wondering if theres a chance I could get permission to duck hunt on one of your properties"

Hello I am Joe schmo. I would like to trade out working a day for you around here for a days worth of duck hunting. I can run a shredder, paint, whatever. Then shut your mouth and let him say as he pleases. If he says ok, you're in. If he tells you to pound sand then be polite, thank him and leave.

I might have the wrong Jacob, but aren't you a band director? If I were you, I would offer an "A" to any student who let me hunt their family's property.

Lead with intro of yourself, ask if they need any labor help on their property. Great lead/ice breaker, follow with "I'll work for free, I just want permission to hunt that pond full of ducks..." Best if you can approach land owner outside working vs knocking on door.

Haha! I wish some of my students had some land! Our school is pretty low income.

If you're a Millennial, then I'd address them as "Chief", "Sport", or "Bud" as is customary for your generation. They'll warm right up to you.

I would start off...."did you vote for Hillary"? His answer depends on what side of the wall you decide to stand on at that moment to get permission to hunt.

You could be a dumbocrat, retartigan or Lib....just be prepared.

Well, I emailed the land manager for the timber company. I lucked out. He told me the spot I was wanting to hunt was public. Score!

You forgot "bro".

My hunting spots in SD, OK and KS were acquired by knocking on doors, striking up conversations in hunting stores, or sitting in country gas stations or cafes with hunting gear on and having friendly folks initiate conversation. Most required very little effort. Then again, I haven't adorned myself with rooster-like ornamentation such as tats, piercings, nose rings, ear hoops, etc.

Most country folks don't extend hunting invitations to hunters that look like the spawn of Satan. Or a lib.
