Monarch high velocity dove loads from Academy with a light modified choke will reach out and get some doves for sure. They are 1350fps. I get either 8 or 7 1/2. On sale right now.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 02:09 PM

I've always done well with 8's. I see most like 7.5 I may see what all the fuss is about but its hard to change when something's working well.

6 for whitewings....7.5 for mourning.

Thanks for the sales notice, I guess I'll go get another case of 12s and 20s in 7/5.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 05:04 PM

if your using a 12GA, 8s fine- prefer 7.5- I use 1oz Rios for 20a

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 05:06 PM

7.5

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 05:09 PM

I like 8's earlier in the season and when hunting over stock tanks. Later in the season, and on passing shots, I switch to 7 1/2's.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 05:30 PM

Might be in my head but I wing fewer mourning dove with 6's. They definitely work better on the white wing, collared and pigeons also.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 05:55 PM

we all shot 12's w/7.5's...way back...
1 1/8oz is way more than needed, so I always looked for the 1oz in 12
most of us have down-sized to 20's
7/8oz is proper for a 20, but the Rio's are 1oz...
wanting a 28 and will shoot 3/4oz, but I'll go w/#8's in that load to help w/pattern density

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 06:10 PM

I shoot 7.5 and sometimes will use 6 later in the season.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 06:40 PM

1 oz shot 7.5 or 8.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 07:17 PM

Here's my understanding, out to 30 yards, flip a coin between 7.5 and 8. Past 35 yards the velocity loss with 8's results in a significant drop in the center of your pattern. While you see a mix of 7.5 and 8 in trap loads, there's a reason why, almost all handicap loads are 7.5.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 07:20 PM

6 or 7.5's. I ran out of dove loads last year and started shooting the 6's with great results on the long shots. Most shots I take are long and 8's just weren't doing it for me.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 10:41 PM

I started shooting Remington Sportsman Hi-Speed #7 Steel. That way I can shoot doves that come in on tanks while hunting teal. It also patterns well from both my 20 gauges. Been shooting skeet with it, it is also required to shoot only steel shot where I shoot trap now.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/25/16 11:13 PM

I usually use 7.5, but during early teal I'll switch to #6 steel.

Always 7.5 high brass Remington's. That extra range comes into play sometimes.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/27/16 04:18 AM

I like 7.5 in my 12 and 16 gauges, #8 in the Twenty gauge.

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/27/16 06:09 AM

I shoot a side by side so I keep different shells on each pockets. On the right chamber is IC or Modified choke so I shoot 7.5s. The left chamber has a tighter pattern so it gets 6s. Something's high brass 6s. I usually do really well with this set up. First shot is usual closer. Then if I miss or are going for a double I stay on em and let me get out a bit and boom drop a 6 on em.
Sometimes I don't try so hard and just use 7.5s. I don't get how people use 8s. I always lose birds that way.

I think we might be overthinking a little here

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/27/16 05:10 PM

6's are easier to pick out of the
meat so you won't crunch a tooth

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/27/16 06:28 PM

Eights have no consistent killing power past 30 yards. 7.5 is the way to go. 6's for the B52 high flyers.

I'll be shooting Remington ShurShot Heavy Dove, 1 1/8oz, 1255fps, 7.5s

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/27/16 11:00 PM

I have only shot with 8s. After reading this I may need to go pick up some 7.5s

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/29/16 04:33 PM

A lot of 7.5 shooters

I noticed Academy carrying a lot more 7.5's than 8's

Must be a trend that got by me

Rio 12 ga 7.5 game load
Posted By: hovercat

Re: Dove Shot Size - 08/29/16 09:11 PM

1 ounce 16 GA reloads with reclaimed shot. A mix of 7.5, 8 and 9.
Worked fine last year, and on clays.

Yall are waaaay overthinking this. I've only been dove hunting for a year and this ain't rocket surgery. Grab whatever is small and cheap and blast away

We should think about it. I want my best option cause I want clean humane kills. Respect to the prey. Think about it.

The one hear had an unusual amount of 8s. And they managed to put them all on top of the others. Makes one have to dig.

It's a dove. Hit it with a well-placed grain of rice and it's going down

I firmly believe that wounded birds are the fault of the shooter and not the ammo

"Eights have no consistent killing power past 30 yards."

How is this proven/documented? Thanks.
