O/U Advice Needed

Alright guys I am in the market for a really nice O/U in a small caliber. 28 or 20. Possibly interchangeable barrels. I know it is not going to be cheap but I want it to be a prize possession that I can pass down to my son or grandson.

I would like to keep the price around $3000 but would probably go up to around $5000 for the right gun. I am asking for recommendations because I usually prefer semi-auto and I don't know much about O/U.

You can get a new Beretta Silver Pigeon I 20/28 gauge combo for around $3,200. That would make a heck of a legacy gun in my opinion!

Have you considered getting a nice 12g O/U and purchasing a set of 28g tubes from Briley? You'll have the best of both worlds, a nice 12g O/U that will shoot inexpensive 12g shells and the ability to simply, reliably and accurately, shoot 28g shells with the same shotgun,

I have owned many an over under. Beretta just doesn't fit me. I got rid of every Beretta I ever bought. I have a Ruger Red Label 28 and hands down that is the finest shotgun I have ever carried. They can only be had used in the $2500ish range.

I am not a fan of the Briley tubes. The 12 ga O/Us are balanced for that size weapon as well as all the other bores. Sticking a tube in there changes the entire character of a shotgun. Just pick up a Ruger Red 28 and then any O/U 12. It is then you will understand what I am saying.

Caesar Guerini 28 gauge or 20. Don't buy a 2 barrel set. My friends that have wind up using only the 28 gauge barrels.

Fits irrelevant. That's what a gunsmith is for. Buy your gun. Spend few 100 bucks- get it fitted. Get forcing cones done as well. I have a buddy who is a gun dealer that is incredible. Tell him what u want. He can find you a mint used gun as well.

Ruger Red Label in 28 ga are scares as hens teeth. I own the Beretta 20/28 combo. I like it but will probably own a 28 in another brand

Strictly hunting- go with one of the 2 barrel sets mentioned. If you are thinking of any of the clay sports, especially skeet, a tube set...especially a nice 20 tubed for 28 and 410. Don't worry about the tubes upsetting balance, you can add weight to the butt to offset that as clays guns are preferred heavier anyway.

Ruger is making the red label again very soon. It is. It is not worth the high prices some folks are paying lately because they think the gun is rare/extinct. The un engraved receiver red label is worth around $1,000. I've bought 3 over the years at gun shows and $925 was the most I paid for a red label. Ever Red label I had, the vent rib would come loose. Briley had to fix all 3 and told me it's a very common problem on Rugers.

Go Beretta or Browning. For $5k+ you can get a Belgium made superposed Browning

Are you looking for a gun that you will hunt with and keep forever or a possible occasional use and resell down the road?

If your not looking for something collectible that will likely increase with time, then I agree on the small bore beretta. I love the 410 I got but agree with some of the above comments that the fit is just not right on the bigger bore. Great fun for under 2k.

Their value is heavily impacted by who the engraver is as "artwork". Generally, the smaller the bore-the more desirable and $$ they cost.

What I love about the old fn b-25's and browning superposed is that they are unique pieces of history and not just a production. They all have a story. I just committed to these two out of a collection and can't wait to get them.

Speaking of 28 gauge shells. I found cases of high speed steel heavy steel nr 4 on macks wings for $109 a case free shipping. Also found federal steel nr 6 at rogers for $90 a case and 7 1/2 and 9 estate for $99 at cabellas. Im all set now. Bought a 28 gauge beretta unica a400 for 1/2 price from a friend. Brand new...

Ruger will start making the 12 again. Later they will make the 20 and if all goes well then they will fire up manufacturing the 28 again. Red 28s are going as high as $2500. I bought mine for $750 before the market for them went apecrap crazy. No rib troubles for me yet. I have fired the Browning 28 and it was good. The Red and I just fit so much better. I was raised on superposed Brownings, still have a superposed 12. I hadn't seen the gun in 25 years (too long of a story) The week I got it back I went to a tournament. 104 out of 106 sport clay. That gun and I were spot on that day.

I appreciate all the advice. I will probably shoot the gun very little each year but my main goal is to have something unique(somewhat) and that I can put in the family to pass down from generation to generation.

I have a gun from my grandfather and it means the world to me. Not worth much per se but invaluable in my family.

Most companies that you can buy a 20/28 OU for a thousand(s) make good guns. If you're looking for unique, opinions won't matter because its unique to you. If you're looking for experience and reviews, the ruger, berettas mentioned are very good. I shoot a citori 28 and point it better than any gun I own. Fantastic gun. If you don't want to go custom (which if you're passing it down may not fit any better than stock) go with the brand that fits you best now of the options mentioned. If you are brand loyal, or looking for a 1 off unique gun our feedback won't be much help

Bought one for 2400 up north. They they can't keep them in stock here. NIB- they do kick like mule. Put 12oz Mercury weight and did forcing combs. It's my South America gun when I don't shoot gas gun.

All the guns mentioned are great guns.
I began shooting a Beretta because the gun I bought fit me very well, right off the rack and I could hit with it.
Berettas are also highly dependable. You'll rarely have a mechanical issue with them.
I shoot a lot of skeet and clays at my gun club. My Berettas have never failed me in a shoot or on a hunt.
Accessories like chokes, cases and optional equipment are easily available for Berettas.
And should you ever need repair work, any competent gunsmith will be well versed on a Beretta.

Like others here I would suggest a Silver Pigeon I with a two barrel set in 20/28. They are available locally or used guns can be found on many online auctions. Gunbroker has several new sets right now starting at around $1850.
Another option would be the Pigeon in 20 gauge with a set of 28 gauge companion tubes. The tube option might save some money.

I own numerous shotguns but for dove, quail and pheasant hunting, my Beretta 20 gauge is one sweet shooting scattergun.

Concerning tubes, I feel no difference in weight or handling in my 12ga Perazzi, tubes or no tubes. If anything, the weight of a 12 attenuated the 28g recoil to the point that it's barely perceptible. Granted, a dedicated 28g will be lighter, but the versatility of shooting multiple gauges out of the same platform is a big plus. Being able to hunt or shoot multiple classes in league clays with a 12g and sub gauge tubes is an added benefit.

Thanks, wish I still had them,,,Big dog and box that is. Pup was a disappointment. Old dog died a couple of years ago, haven't got up to getting another yet.

Back to the thread, here is today's limit with the Gran Lightning 28ga. Which ever make of gun you choose make sure of the fit. Citoris seem to fit me best and I like their handling.

correction: the sets on Gunbroker begin at around $2850, not $1850. Sorry 'bout that.
