I know they will come after you, has happened to me several times, I never let them live long enough to know if they would just swim up to me and sniff me or bite me. One time, I'm sitting in lily pads at dark 30 early teal season, something told me to look around for snakes, I get up, turn headlamp on, look next to me and a snake is peaceifully curled up on a lily pad 3 feet from me. I blew it to bits, not sure if cottonmouth or not.

Hunted a pond one time open day of teal season, the pond was infested with them. Probably shot 6 of them, all of them swim right up to us (me and my son).

All snakes in and around the water are cottonmouths!

Ya'll can have the early teal season and the cottonmouths.
I was out looking around, in my boat last Friday going up one creek that was barely out of bank, when I turned a corner I saw the two biggest cottonmouth's I have ever seen tangled up with each other. As soon as they saw me turn the corner one of them slid off the bank into the water and came straight for me, water snakes do not do that but cottonmouths will, the head on that thing was the size of a snuff can, scared the crap out of me no doubt. Only saw a couple teal as well.

Went to another lake after that one and was cruising some flooded veggies when I rolled up on two alligators in two separate flats, again not many teal around at all.

Not many teal and too many dangers out there with all the lakes rising this year for me to chance my life or my dogs this season.

They don't have to be in or near water. All snakes... period. I consider them copperheaded rattle moccasins until proven otherwise. (Usually when dead)

And anyone who says they won't bite underwater is full of it. I caught a whopper sized cottonmouth on a crankbait one day and he had hooks all inside of his mouth. And apparently they can't be drowned. But dragging one around underwater for 15 minutes with a mouth full of treble hooks will dang sure pizz one off.

Seen a few, never had one come after me though, usually just slither off into the water or stay curled up untill I shoot them

I've never had an issue with snakes during a hunt. One time during a dove hunt a buddy on the other side of a field started going crazy and shooting the ground turned out to be a huge rattle snake. He probably could have just walked away too I guess. During teal season I'm more concerned with mosquitoes. They have torn me up in the past.

all this is what makes teal season my favorite.... anyone can go sit in a nice blind with no bugs, snakes, gators, and have a nice dog to get their birds.. prolly ride a boat all the way to the blind and were waders for no reason... good day sheep.... good day

Numerous times when a cottonmouth tried to get in the Jon boat while fishing or hunting. But always IIRC after daylight. Either way, they are dealt with some shot shell quickly.
