Joe Grade Coot Decoys

Joe Grade Coot Decoys - 09/07/15 01:12 AM

Long weekend and we stayed home. Had my daughter help me with these "Joe" grade coots.

Started with 6 that were either sinkers or GHG's that were chipping paint.

Drilled out the bottoms with a 1"paddle bit and filled with spray foam insulation.

Let that cure and then sliced off the insulation that expanded out of the hole.

Coated the decoys with flat black rustoleum oil based paint. Let that dry over night.

Taped off the bills (if I wanted to go crazy would have cut them to match that of a coot, but I didn't want to go crazy(er)) and painted them with white flat rustoleum oil based paint as is.

I let that coat dry for about an hour then added another coat of white and covered it with white nylon flocking.

Took off the tape and hit the rest of the decoy with another heavy coat of flat black. While it was still wet/sticky, coated the entire decoy (even the white bill) with black flocking. Shook off the excess and it left the white, white.

I let that dry then had my daughter paint the eyes and top of bill red and she painted some variety of black markings on each bill right over the flocking.

I think they turned out pretty solid and the flocking makes for a very abrasion resistant coating.

Will use them for big ducks as a confidence booster off to the side of the main spread.

I've heard that most use a couple of coats of flocking but I was happy with one coat and these are coot deeks so... good enough for coots good enough for me.

One coat of flocking looks a lot better than none, you will find over time that it rubs off easier though. And just like paint, when you think one coat looks good, two looks even better! I'm not trying to harsh your vibe, they look good, just more of a future note if you ever feel like double dipping.

Thanks guys. Another coat would be better, maybe something to do during the split. Was going to wait for big ducks but looking forward to seeing them out there this weekend!
