Canada trip

Anyone on here been to Canada on a duck/goose combo hunt? Myself and several buddies are trying to start getting one planned up for Fall 2016. When are the best times to go to kill the most numbers and outfitters that yall have used? Also, what kind of stuff is needed to make an out of country hunting trip up there?

Best time to go is early October in my opinion. September is good hunting, but it's generally hot and the birds aren't in plum yet. However, October can be a gamble sometime with really cold weather. I'd talk to Ward and go off his recommendation. We had multiple 6 person 100+ bird shoots. Most of the time you kill both your ducks and geese in the AM hunt. However, they set up for geese in the AM and if you don't get your ducks you go back out in the PM to finish out the limit.

I've been 10-15 times never have used an outfitter. Just scouted, knocked on doors and asked for permission. Only been turned down once cause they already gave someone else permission. Always went to Saskatchewan always had good hunts. I would never use a outfitter. We always drove never had any issues crossing the boarder. Just have everything ready and convert any liqueur to liters.

thanks for the replies. Going on our own is kind of out of the question. We don't have the gear nor time it takes to do it ourselves up there. Plus time is an issue. I'd like to atleast only take one week of vacation lol. And with the days driving up there and back would kill atleast 4-5 days that we could be hunting. Barney, what all is needed to get into Canada with a firearm?

A simple form you fill out and a $25 fee to customs in Canada. The form must accompany the firearm in the field when you are hunting. It's very simple or at least it was every time I've been. Ward has all this information on the website I linked above.

I am heading up to hunt with Ward on September 28th. This will be my 6th year in a row to hunt with Ward. Ward is a great guy and great outfitter. You will not be disappointed. This is a video we put together of a hunt 2 years ago.

What do you guys do with the birds you kill up there? mail them back? I'm going on this trip with the OP and just wondering what were going to do with the birds.

How much of a hassle is it to get a permit to bring your shotgun or does the outfitter supply them?

a DIY trip to Canada interest me greatly

Getting in and out of Canada with firearms and meat is easy. I have been going to Saskatchewan for the past three years. The outfitter I hunt with is awesome. I also hunt with him in Colorado. His website is www.featheredfowl. You will have a blast.

All we do is scout and knock on doors when we find birds. We take our meat to a processor and then the lady where we stay will ship the meat to us. Never have had any issues crossing the border just have all your paperwork done.

How do you get to Saskatchewan?

Yeah you're driving across from North Dakota or Montana, but how are you getting to North Dakota?

We go through Montana never had a hassle heard some stories about the North Dakota crossing. Just have everything ready for them and it goes pretty easy. Just have a clean record cause they check that! No DUI or felony!! They won't let you cross!

Are the residents pretty easy going as far as hunting permission?

Yes they are real nice people. Never had any issues usually they have family that has land and you get permission to hunt their land too!! They hate geese up there they eat their crop and that's their money!

I think that the land laws there prohibit leasing of land for hunting purposes. They have the right to post their land or selectively allow hunting, they just can't charge for it. That means they aren't trying to charge you and most of them are happy if you bust up a few geese and keep them off their crops.

Buy a case of whiskey and a couple smoked hams be polite and you can hunt almost anything you want . Just remember to be respectfull of their land and keep it clean . Also don't be surprised if you have to help eat the ham and drink the whiskey you give to them LoL.
