Transferring to Ole Miss next year - Ducks?

Transferring to Ole Miss next year - Ducks? - 05/01/15 01:30 AM

What's up. I am transferring to Ole Miss next year from SMU, and have never hunted Mississippi in my life time. I know Ole Miss is 1 hour from the Mississippi Delta Flyaway, and that area has tons of waterfowl species.

But I have never hunted up there... I got recommended to go trough MS Delta Ducks msdeltaducks.com and they seem like they know what they're doing. Their prices are steep, but what they offer is prestige (they make it sounds as if it is). I am yet to look at the properties and will be looking at them this summer.

Does anybody have any secrets to this area, or any connections, or just any tips? I'd love to slay some ducks up there...only shot 4 mallards in my life. bang

Sardis lake has lots of ducks and duck hunting from what I remember there is a WMA on the upper part of the lake with public hunting. There is also an early resident goose season

Could tell you a lot more about the hunting around Starkville and Mississippi State than Oxford.

If you aren't in a fraternity yet you may look into joining one. My cousin joined a fraternity out there and met a bunch of guys who had excellent places to duck hunt within a couple hours of there. That or join the ducks unlimited or delta waterfowl chapter at ole miss if they have one.

I guess I must have to PM Jeff Elder and get the intel. I'm bringing my boat up to campus and am gonna store it nearby, so I'm gonna have to check out that lake on Google Earth or something.

I'm looking forward to hunting out there. I've never hunted timber either, so that'll be fun to try that out. I'm an SAE here, so I'm gonna be re-pledging at Ole Miss. Don't hate on me, please. bolt

It'll be good though, really looking forward to it. Anybody ever heard of MS Delta Ducks though?

I've never gotten to hunt that far North but I have hunted down at Greenville just off of the River with some customers and it is great. You also need to make a trip down to Grenada this time of year and crappie fish. Everyone down there has a 3 pound or better crappie mounted in their office. Crappie grow giant down there. When I went with my customers at lake Sardis we took a boat out and jig fished wading with long cane poles and it was one of the best times I've ever had in my life.

with the trim running around Oxford that last thing I'd think about is ducks. You only have so many years of college. You can duck hunt the rest of your life. cheers

Whoa whoa whoa lets not get all hasty now. There is a time and a place for everything. Duck hunt in the morning and trim in the evening. Boom, life is good. Aint no reason to run down the hill and pick one sport over the other.

My Brother is finishing up his 2nd degree at Ole Miss. He told me that most of his buddies were into deer hunting, there were a few duck hunters but not many. Take it for what it's worth but I'm sure you'll find duck hunters there.

They shut down the refuge on Sardis several years ago. Use to have thousands of Canadas wintering there but they got short stopped up north and quit coming. There are a few good spots east of Hwy 7 near the DU project up there. There are also beaver ponds scattered around all over the lake that hold diucks. That is where the locals that hunt public kill most of their ducks as the Corps virtually empties the lake every winter. I grew up hunting the north side of the lake but never hunted the Oxford side. Elder should be able to help you there. Feel free to PM me if you need more specifics.

Fowlslayer
The guys you need to contact are Steve and Justin Prather at MS Delta Hunts Leland MS.
Not to say anything bad about the other guys but they created a name as close as they could to Steve and Justin who have been in business forever. Look up their website and contact them about a hunt.
I have known Steve for 20 years. He owns all the land he hunts. Last year he had 28 pits.
These guys are good people.

I would spend more time riggng my spread by the tri Delt house. I don't know what it's like now but all the farmers where either Phi Delts, or KA. They are going have access to private. Almost failed a final because the ducks were hot down in Belzonna

Listen to Jeff, he is a wise man. Spend most of your off-season scouting the tri delt house – worth it.

I was there 5 years ago and the KA's were the biggest hunters when I was there. There is an Ole Miss DU chapter than can get you hooked up with some guys to hunt with. Plenty of duck hunters, lots of access to great spots in the Delta, just got to make friends to get in on it.

There is good public hunting on Sardis and out towards the Delta (having a 4-wheeler is best for getting around these spots). MS Wildlife website has all the info on these. I would recommend putting in for the draw hunts, they can be pretty productive
