Headed North Right Now

Headed North Right Now - 02/10/15 08:52 PM

Well that is it. I caught an investigation Friday night and it has been a booger to say the least. I am finally done with the case, everything turned in ect. I was supposed to be off all week this week but that investigation threw a wrench in the fan. I couldn't leave with all the work pending and evidnce sitting around the lab.

I have the truck packed. All I have to do is stop by Jared's and head home. Kiss my bride goodbye, load the dog and off I go to Kansas to shoot some big birds. I am shooting Canada geese, my podna thinks he is shooting Canadian geese. I should be in Dallas by 10PM, grab a few hours sleep. Up at 4:30in the AM and we are going to burn that highway up!! I am glad I took the hubs off of my flatbed trailer. I wouldn't have made Dallas and dang sure wasn't making it to Kansas and back. I had two bearing sets I needed to replace, one was dry enough to be concerned. The last one was good to go.

I shall be reporting back from the KS fields.

Thank you Dave. We shall see. I am getting mixed reports. You don't know for sure until you get your butt in the mud and the steel in the air.

We drove to a city X and found the geese had pushed away from the area. Our host was a gracious man and did wht he could do. We hunted his pit blind and had good success shooting cacklers, specs and honkers. I love that pit blind with the roll top. This was a new experience for sure. I will post pics when I get them loaded.

Our host is a crusty old waterfowler. He was interested in call making and we talked for a while about calls. He went to his house and brought back this 100 year old fence post. It is Hedge, which is excelent call material. Hegde is also known as Osage or Bois De Arc. The most common name of the tree is a horse apple tree.

Re: Headed North Right Now - 02/16/15 04:51 PM

I learned a long time ago to find my blessing somewhere other than a number of geese killed. If i were to rely on a number of geese, I would have quit a long time ago. I was pleased to meet an old waterfowler from another part of the country, talk about calls and hunting. He showed us tiny little tidbits of the history up there. It was nice to go to a restaruant that had a row of tractors parked out front. Starched Amish don't use cars but willdrive a tractor to town. I took the whole experience in and enjoyed my surroundings. It was well worth the time and effort just to go see everything. Shooting geese was just a bonus.

Re: Headed North Right Now - 02/17/15 02:06 AM

I had a hedge apple tree in my yard growing up. I did not know it was of any value until you said it makes great material for duck calls.

Re: Headed North Right Now - 02/17/15 03:32 PM

It has slight value. It would cost about $3 for enough wood to make a duck call if you bought it at a wood outlet. The value in this wood is the history behind it.
