There is a pond in an area I quail hunt. Sometimes I bring a few steel loads and jump shoot. All year the only ducks there are spoonies and coots. It is a small pond, 100yards X 50yards but they are always there. I am not an avid waterfowler. Would any of you have a guess why there are never any other ducks there like teal, wigeon, etc..? It doesnt seem like a spot where i would set up a decoy spread and wait - not too many ducks flying around the area. Lower Laguna Madre is about 25-30miles east. thanks

Coots and the odd blue-wing teal in my neck of the woods...a guess there are better spots nearby. Also, remember not to have lead shot with you when pond jumping. If looking for a mixed bag you would have to settle for steel for the quails. Not implying you did, but not sure given your post, just a heads up.

I dont dislike them and i feel fortunate to have to opportunity. Just wondering why they are they only ducks there. Although it would be nice if there were some other ducks there.

If you are shooting quail with lead. Then switch to steel for ducks and then switch back to lead for quail to hunt your way out; you just broke the law. Be careful.
More than likely the pond has spoonies because there is a food source they really like. I personally like the Northern Shoveler!!!

I just use #6steel when i hunt that spot and leave the lead in the truck.

Take it for what it is worth but I wouldn't even have lead in the truck. If you know you are going to be hunting both then just use steel. It will kill quail just fine as well and if you were to get stopped on the way home with lead in the truck with some ducks you may have an issue.

Spoonbills go just about anywhere, and can always find something to feed on. I've got a few places where we only shoot Greenwing teal. It's like that every year. It's just the habitat that's there. Although I wouldn't be surprised if over time you get a couple other ducks in there. May only be a few, but others will stop by.
