Need some quick goose advice

Need some quick goose advice - 01/14/15 03:45 PM

Not a goose hunter at all and seldom hunt ducks. Got invited on a guided hunt this weekend up around Haskell. Supposed to be a lot of birds right now. I was told we'd be hunting fields out of pit blinds and shooting mostly decoying birds. I have two choices of shotguns, a 12 O/U with fixed M/F chokes or an 870 with interchangeable chokes (I have IC/M/F tubes). Both are 3" chambers. The O/U is my go to gun for just about everything, but I'm wondering if I need to break out the 870 for a more open choke and to get a 3rd shot? Also would appreciate advice on a good load for geese? Thanks!

I would take the 870. 3rd shot and the choke seal the deal.

3" BBs. I like Kent Faststeel, but any will suit your needs well enough.

Generally it is advised not to shoot steel through a full choke, so going to the 870 with Improved or Modified would be best.

870 with the modified choke. That 3rd shot will come in handy.

I don't think the 3rd shot is all that important (I shoot an O/U for dang near everything so I am biased), but the choke selection is a clincher

I would throw the improved in there and go rock that goose arse.

Take the 870. Depending how nice the pit is, that can be about as dirty of a hunt as you will find. Wouldn't want to take a nice o/u in the pits I hunt.

870, I like shooting #4s for geese. Most guys will say 2s or lower but for my money a fast number 4s kills more birds that are decoying. It only takes one pellet in the head to kill a goose and fast number 4s gives you more of a chance to make that happen. As far as chokes I or M should work for decoying birds.

Good luck have fun, sit as close to the guy calling the shot as you can...
