6 limits of green and some bonus cranes - 01/03/15 03:13 PM

Finally got to kill a few mallards the other day. We went to pass shoot cranes but saw all these mallards bombing into a pond so decided to try to kill a few and it worked out great!! 30 greenheads!!!

Sorry to break it to you...but mallards have yellow bills. Those are northern shovelers. Shovelheads. Spoonbills.

Fwiw...you could have shot six spoonies per gun. Not a 5 drake limit like mallards.

Still a good shoot though! cheers

Did you shoot the sand hills with steel? I always wondered what a game warden would do if you had ducks and lead shot shells on your person.

Very nice haul.

If he was a truly dedicated professional he would pull out a magnet and verify what you shot the bird with!

Less time and hassle than writing a ticket! But i ain't riskin it. Thats why hevi shot is worth the $$$$. Atleast it was before the recall.

Good shoot, JP...nothing like mallards back peddling over the decoys

We shot them all with 3" steel #1's & 2's.

We didn't even need decoys! The pond was only about the size of a swimming pool and the only open water for probably 15 miles.

Glad you found a method to match your skill set and a clientele to pay to pas shoot.

Neither of those trips were with clients. We have pass shot cranes with clients before but never geese. It's hard to kill cranes over sillosocks with a 30 mph wind.

"It's hard"...... oh my goodness we can't have that.

Always good to see the guys that crow about their high dollar decoy rigs before the season on the fence rows come the first of January.

Funny and a little sad.

Mostly funny though.

If clients want to kill birds and not watch sillosocks death wobble for 3 hours in a field I recommend pass shooting on a day with extremely high winds. As I said we never pass shoot geese with clients. That was last year in Oklahoma and if I can sit on a fence row and pass shoot 20 snow geese in an afternoon without ever touching a decoy then that is fine by me. Go ahead and crawl back under your rock and come back out around the second week of February and hopefully I will have some cow silhouette pictures for you to cry about.

I'm with you on that...heck, if I booked a goose hunt and the outfitter said we could either put out a thousand decoys and lay in the mud, and kill 12 snows all day or we can pass shoot or use this cow decoy and have a good time and a massacre, I'd be all for the second option!
