SKYBUSTERS!!!! - 12/20/14 02:47 PM

I just need to get this rant off my chest. Today must not have been opening day for the second split instead I think sky buster season opened up today. Right as legal rolled around it sounded like world war three for at least 15 min. You can go ahead and argue that they were at the X but there are not anywhere near enough ducks around for the amount of shooting there was. As I type this from my blind I watch four guys burn all three on one duck at least 65 yards up. My only guess as to why they shoot this way is because they're afraid those dastardly ducks are going to steal their $20 flambeau decoys. End of rant.

We need to impose a 15 shell limit on WMA.

Re: SKYBUSTERS!!!! - 12/20/14 03:29 PM

"Because (I/we) sometimes drop one" is the main excuse I've heard used by people who insist on shooting outside of 40 yards. I guess "because you always educate a few" and "you often cripple or kill birds unknowingly" is not good enough to keep people from taking the hail marys.

15 shells sounds like a good idea right after the wardens can effectively enforce shooting early, shooting late, illegal vehicles, no plugs, hunting proper zones, bag limits, carrying proper permits, and anything else you can think of.

I've been watching a lot of the so-called professionals on youtube channels and even with camera angles and whatever I see them dropping ducks out pretty far away most times. They're all using PM chokes and slaying greenheads at what I estimate as 40+ yards consistently. Heck, there's one group of guys on youtube that I swear they've never even finished a group of mallards and yet they still drop them like rain on the first or second pass.

Makes me wonder if I'm holding back too much. Last hunt of the 1st split Hopedale had to pretty much kick me out of my seat on a wigeon that I thought was too far away... He kept saying "Shoot it, shoot it" and I was sitting there saying "No, it's too far"! I ended up caving in to the peer pressure and dropping that bird on the third shot. I was being too cautious and almost missed out on a great looking bird.

Moral of the story: I'm going to be a skybuster next time I hunt.

25 shell limit on all public land. If you cant get it done with that then its time to head home.

So if I want to shoot 6 ducks, 15 dove, 15 coots, 5 mergansers, 5 dark geese, 20 light geese and 8 snipe the I need to do it with 25 shells? Makes sense...

Ain't skybusting if you drop em.

If you drop them or not at 65 yards, it is still skybusting in my book. But it is what it is on public. I shoot IC #4 all season on public, so with this choke and shell size I can't skybust. But if I wanted too, I could sky bust too, and drop them. This would require I change my choke (maybe full choke) and shot size (say 3 1/2 inch BB), shoot them close you will destroy the duck with this load, but deadly on the long skybusting shot.

I hope I never stoop to the level of skybusting, I like to watch the ducks work, shoot them close, and eat my duck as well. I will wait till all the skybusters get their limit of torn up ducks and leave the area, and then I can kick back and enjoy the rest of the morning, watching the ducks work and shooting them up close over deeks.

Many of us choose not to skybust, so personal preference, as I describe in my post above.

Why shoot them while they are still paddling. hammer
I prefer to let them stop swimming first. Makes for
a much easier shot if you wait till they are not moving.

Exactly my goal every trip... I actually get a bit disappointed if all we shoot are the ones that were either passing by or the ones that "suicide" right into the spread with no calling required. I get really pumped up if we finish some birds all the way down then pick out the drakes.

I mean I get what your sayin it's hard to beat watching that happen.. And when it all comes together just right it leaves you speechless. But is it pride.. Is it desire.. Or just show and tell? Don't forget your roots man the reason your there.. Iv shot more birds by letting everyone else call and not touching mine.. Iv also whatched birds work for ten minutes overs someone rattling a shakafeed and making a noise that sounded like something that should be on a foxpro.. Just shoot what you can or want to and enjoy the hunt

Re: SKYBUSTERS!!!! - 12/25/14 05:49 PM

They imposed a shell limit on a particular major public hunting area in south Arkansas a few years ago. I think it is two boxes per person. I've heard it helped cut down on some of the useless shooting.
