Banded Wigeon

I killed a banded widgeon this morning. Had a pair come in early but left. After watching ducks land in the corner of the field all morning I decided to leave the blind and just sit where they kept landing. Later in the hunt another pair of wigeon came back and after several passes the drake gave me a good shot. I knew he was a pretty bird but was shocked when I recovered him on my way out to see he was banded. The band is really worn and hard to read the numbers. I knew he was a old bird, banned in 2005. One of the 2 bands i have was of a snow goose shot in china texas in 2005, banded in churchill manitoba in 1989
Which is pretty old
Tracked the band down to a guy who banded it as a school project. He now works at a new york science museum
I still talk to him yearly and shot some ducks with him last year in illinois

On top of a spectacular bird, the band has a pellet scar. I don't know why I am so intrigued with pellet scars. They are just kewl.

Yes, that pellet scar adds to a already awesome trophy! I also am excited that I killed him with my favorite 20 gauge!

Can you take a better pic if the pellet scar? I am also curious as to how far the bird and what load you used. I know, I am weird.

I'll get a better pic, it's at my taxidermist. The bird was twenty yards or so and I shoot 3" #4s in my 20.

I was specifically looking for angle of pellet impact, speed and pellet size. So #4, I got. What I am getting at is depending on angee of impact, I wanted to see how bad that pellet dented that band. I have seen them embedded into the band before.

It is the cross over twix a hunter and a CSI guy. The hunter in me wants to know the ballistics upon impact. The CSI in me wants to know angles ect. Ex: I could see a pellet had hit the band and one in the neck. Was the pellet scar from that shot that killed it or was it corroded? If corroded it would suggest another shot the bird but was very unfortunate. That kind of stuff is kewl.

my only band has a pellet scar, not sure if it was from my shot or someone didn't realize how close they were but that's the story I usually tell!
