Another cool catch for Quapa

Another cool catch for Quapa - 12/02/14 07:15 PM

These guys are hard to catch because they do not like to leave the safety of the water. After pushing this guy into skinny, small water, he was forced to make a break over open ground which allowed Quapa (the falcon) to get a clean shot. Quapa hit him about ten feet from the water about three feet off the ground. The duck bounced off the dirt, Quapa winged over, and added to his yearly total.

How bad are the birds after he gets ahold of them? Would make a cool story for a mount

If you get to them quickly enough you can mount them. I have several falconry friends who have mounted ducks in their homes that their falcons have caught. If you give them a few minutes they start plucking and then tearing flesh to eat. I'm personally done with mounts except in very special situations. I worked as a taxidermist in a museum and I'm done taking care of mounted animals that gradually decay over decades unless they are kept under glass. Plus if you mounted every duck you caught that had a cool story associated with it you would mount a ton of birds!

Guys in his area need to take him hunting!! Falconry is even more impressive in person. I have a friend that flys peregrine for duck and was flying something else on pheasant. Having a peregrine on your fist is pretty wild.

I wish I had the camera equipment to video it well. Maybe one day. When duck hawking goes well, it is one of the most impressive things you will ever see.

That is the cat's arse.

I've had to get two teal from birds this season. You would be amazed how fast they get to them. I wish they would hold onto them so I could get some pics.

Those birds stealing the teal are probably northern harriers. They learn the sounds of gunshots in some places mean dead ducks and will come try to snag them. Thankfully a falcon is slightly more noble than that.
