Waterfowl on the coast

Waterfowl on the coast - 11/19/14 10:23 AM

Well, looks like I'm finally gonna get to give this a try. I got tomorrow off but I have no idea where to start. my first question is, how's the bird numbers looking? Enough to have at least a little shooting? I grew up hunting big water divers in MN so I'm not a complete noob to it. I'll have about 4 doz dekes (less if i gotta hump it more than a couple miles) of various divers & a few pins. To further complicate things, I don't currently have a boat so my 2nd question is, how hard is it to find a walk-in spot in the Corpus/Aransas/Rockport/O' Connor area? I don't mind walking a few miles if that's what it's gonna take to see some birds. My plan was to scout tomorrow afternoon/evening & see if I can find an area some birds are using. Any tips/advise you guys could give would be much appreciated.

Not sure about any walk in spots in those areas as I've always ran my boat, but I wouldn't have the assumption that you can just walk a couple miles in the tidal marshes of the coast. Most of that is soft, thick, sinking mud. If you're planning to hunt big water for divers, 4 dozen would be a minimum amount of deeks I would throw, as our diver groups are in the hundreds-thousands. You'd be better off finding a refuge to hunt and hiking in there

Tons of walk in options in the area. Just find a blind that is already built and walk out to it.

Or get familiar with what is GLO property, and lay down on the bank.

Be careful of channels, tides, oysters, and stay off the federal land in that area because they don't allow duck hunting.

Good luck

Hardly any public places from POC to Rockport for sure . You have to go across intercoastal canal to get into anything remotely close to hunt able waters be safe and let us know how you did

Thanks for the tips guys. Ended up getting stuck on location this morning. I'm supposed to be on shift work, 6p-6a but my relief's pickup broke down (I really hate DEF systems) & I was stuck at work til 11. Gonna try to get out tomorrow. Probably gonna get there by daybreak & try to find something for the afternoon/evening.
