Best option for layout brush base layer?

What do you guys use for your base layer on layouts? If you have any pictures, post em up! Thanks in advance for the help.

That just depends on your location. Rye grass or wheat field go green. Dead grass go dead grass, exct exct

We have had good luck using raffia grass. Holds up to the elements well, and blends in pretty good, especially as a base layer. You can order it in bulk from joseph stern company cheaper than you can find it anywhere else.

Ohhhh!! You want to know about raffia grass. Don't buy the cheap stuff from craft stores unless you like cockle burs matted up on your blind. Lot better luck keeping them out with the Cabelas brand or Avery brand. Its more course. Separate it into small bunches and zip tie it in the middle, then cow hitch it on to your stubble straps. If you don't you will leave a trail of raffia grass everywhere you go until its all gone.

Joseph Stern Company is who provides the raffia to Cabelas and Avery. It is the exact same stuff, but you do have to order bulk for them to sell to you. If you are doing just one blind or don't have several people to split the order with it is cheaper just to buy Avery or Cabelas brand. We have had no problems with burs getting in ours and we hunt around alot of them (I am always having to pull them out of my dog). Completely agree with how to attach it!

I use Hobby Lobby raffia in several colors. Jeff is absolutely correct- it is thinner and collects a lot of burrs and sticks. I, however, do not mind it too much and my field khaki Hard Core Run-N-Gunner has some streaks of flat camo spray paint on it and it is totally grassed up with cheap raffia and cheap plastic green vines that I zip-tied onto the web straps... I've been using that same grass since 2008 and haven't added or changed it at all. I've lost a little bit here and there, but I had like 10lbs of it on there at first.

I realize that, sorry if my reply came across rude. I agree the other stuff can be frustrating I tried a little of it before ordering the good stuff.

Just as an fyi the "junk" at Hobby Lobby is the exact same stuff you can get from Avery or Cabela's all 3 of them use Joseph Stern as their supplier, or at least according to the Joseph Stern website. A buddy of mine bought out the store when they went on sale for $4 a bag at Hobby Lobby a year or two ago. I just ordered 25 lbs from Joseph Stern and it was the exact same stuff as what my buddy had bought from Hobby Lobby. With the 25 lbs I was able to completely cover 4 blinds and still had extra to spare. I believe it was around $140 after shipping, which would of easily $300 plus had I went through had I went through Cabela's or Avery's. I just got the natural color and spray painted it to match the area I'd be hunting,just fyi it soaks up the spray paint quick I went through 3 cans on 1 blind.

Hobby Lobby sells 2 different types of raffia.

Curly Raffia is the junk that is too fine for blinds.

Your right I know absoluty nothing. I only hunt 7 days a week. I will know roll over on my back and show my soft underbelly in submission

Y'all take it easy! I just did a touch up on my blind since we have a lot of greenery around the spots I hunt. I bought silly looking Hobby Lobby 6' plastic garland vines and wove them in between the grasses I have on there. Everybody gets a laugh about my blind until they walk away about 50 yards and try to find it...
