SMALL PLOT IN NE TEXAS

I have a lease in NE Texas. My spot was near a creek bottom with a feeder. There was some bare areas around my feeder and I had heard of no till and just spreading seed. I found a source in Terrell for a fall mix. With no prep I simply scattered 50lb of seed over 25sq yards. I know pretty small. But after 2 + weeks I have clover oats, rye about 1.5-2 inches tall. With the Hoping the coming rain will yield more and that this will be a great draw as season progresses. Hoping to work with the land owner next year for a little tilling and even better results. So far I have invested less than $25 and less than an hour of sweat equity. Any suggestions I am happy to consider. Folks that sold me the seed said not to fertilize as it may burn up the seed.

Clover, oats and rye have got to be loving this rain!

Nice! congrats. Planted mine mid-October and still don't have anything up. Hopefully this rain gets it there.

That's about when mine went in. Try Poston Seed in Terrell. They have a fall mix that will cover an acre. I over seeded with 50lb bag for $23.50 including taxes. It is their Fall Wildlife blend.

What did you do to keep birds from eating seed with the no till process??

just over seed or rake it in with a hard tine rake.

I disc about 5 acres of mine since its open and broadcast it and another 8acres that surrounds it with a lot of big pin oaks and clean bottom along with my yard lol.. it all comes up but the disced part produces much more yield.. I actually did a few sections of the disced part over with a tiller and it came up really well.. lots of work on the little tiller though.. the deer have been using that one spot more than any... we always just broadcast race horse oats all the years I remember with my dad on leases.. always worked well but it was good ground and rain decided what happened with it..

Heres a pic of some of it.. I also always cover is cereal rye once the oats get old and start to rust or have been eaten to nothing... I did a half in rye and left a half in oats one year and the deer would use the rye once the oats got tough... just a filler but it stays tender and grows easy.. also easier to deal with and clean that spring weeds once its time for spring plots...

I planted 1/2 acre this season bag oats and some mix with clover and turnip type stuff came up good but deer keep it down to ground they still spend time in this spot I can barely tell that anything is planted.
