plots planted, now what - 09/26/17 02:05 PM

Got my plot planted in NTX on Saturday since the weather showed a 60% for Wednesday and 40% for thursday. Chances for Wed have gone to 20% but 50% for thurs. my soil was dry dry dry. I really hope we get this rain cause I spread a ton of fertilizer with my seed. If i dont get rain soon im worried my seed will get burned up

The seed won't burn up. When it gets rain it will come up. I have seen different birds and animals work a dormant plot pretty good, it is amazing what can be picked up even though is immediately below the surface but I suspect you will be fine.

IF you have hogs where you are...I'd be more worried about them. I've lost two smaller food plots to them already in the last few weeks (they love peas).

Having to replant.

annnndddddd now all chances of rain have been updated to 0%. how many gallons of water would it take to properly water 1/3acre?

they should be fine ... just wait on the next rain, those that don't get eaten by birds should come up when enough moisture comes from nature.

There are 8(eight) 16 oz bottles in a gallon of water. So just multiply whatever number you get times 8 and that gives us 72,000 bottles of water to give his 1/3 acre plot an inch of water....

OK taking this a step further, there are 40 bottles in a normal package of bottled water at sams club, and at 2.99 per package that would amount to 5400 bucks (72,000/40=1800 x 3= 5400), but more importantly it is 1800 packages of water, and given a maximum cargo weight of a typical pickup around 1750#, and with each package weighing 44 lbs (approx.), that would mean approx. 45 trips to and from just to deliver without a trailer (1800*44= 79200/1750= 45). Gas killer!

Yeah, that's the reason we don't do water bottle sprinkler systems, because of the gas savings bang

One thing I have noticed is you can water plants with a hose and it will do ok but rain will really make a difference. There must be something extra in rain water that plants and grass really like.

Excellent observation. Even our well water doesn't produce the same results as rain water.

its the evenness of the rain that makes it better. Water from a hose or any other man source is uneven and the water penetration isn't going to be even across the root structure, so plants don't like it as much as rain.

Yes, you are correct. Rain from a lightning storm is the best. The reason being is lighting causes nitrogen to lose electrons, so they end up binding with the oxygen and hydrogen in the rain clouds to form nitrates. Really enriches your soil.

In regards to evenness, this isnt necessarily true. Soil acts like a sponge. If you take a perfectly dry sponge and just hold the corner of it under the faucet, the entire sponge will become wet. Soil, much like a sponge, is filled with pores. As pores begin to fill the water spills over into the surrounding pores. you will have an epicenter for the moisture, but the plants dont give a rats *** about it haha. to them as long as they can take it up, they are happy. they dont care if its coming from the right side of their root system or the left.

Rain also doesn't have a lot of "extras" like tap and well water, i.e calcium build up and chlorine to name a couple things
