Road tow your disc like a pro

Need to tow my JD BWF disc to the shop to have some work performed on it. It is a pretty good distance up the highway, and I thought I would share a tip about towing a drag type disc with those that haven't done it.



Due to the lateral play in the disc gangs on a disc that has angle adjustments, they are notorious for a slight shift in mass that has flipped many a tractor and truck into a ditch while moving along a paved road. Once the fish tailing starts, it is tough to stop it because of the weight of a typical disk. I have personally experienced just a mild fish tail when towing with both tractor and truck, just moving my disc up the FM to the next gate.

It is very easy to eliminate the play that creates the shift that creates the loss of control. Simply run a come-a-long from tow bar near the tongue to the outer extreme of either front gang and tighten the heck out of it.



I'm not smart enough to come up with this on my own but learned this from the service manager at Kelly Mudd in Hallettsville and just thought I would share.

You ever tried to set it on a flatbed?

Don't have one. I suspect that it can be tricky depending on how steep the ramps are. A couple of weeks ago, I moved a bunch of stuff that I placed on consignment. I have a 18' dovetail auto carrier with removable sides. Loaded it up pretty good!





I loaded everything on the trailer with the trailer off the truck. I have an 8' spanner bar, an I-beam, that I set across the pallet forks of my front end loader with a heavy 25' chain down the channel of the beam. Loaded the trailer is 20 to 25 minutes by myself.

That's a serious grubbler... and that planter looks new!

Grubber is an Armstrong Ag 42" Grubbing plow. Planter is three years old.


Yeah, that's me. Wanted to go the no-till route and I am also expanding my acreage planted in native grasses. Bought a Land Pride NTS2507.

Uup! Figure I have about 12 to 15 years left in me if I'm lucky, of doing this and I have been pecking at some of the work I want to do because I don't have the right equipment to get the job done.

It's on consignment at Kelly Mudd in Hallettsville 361-798-4094. It is an 8' IGQN gear driven tiller, not chain driven. Made in China and it has been a tank, does a heck of a job plus I take care of my stuff.





I bought it from Ag Products in MO, they import them, and they offer complete support. The Ag Products web page has the specs on the tiller. This is a heavy tiller and requires 80 horsepower as a minimum. At one time Ag Products imported the 12' model, the video of it working was impressive, but it took a very large tractor. I don't know if it is still on the lot as we settle up about once a year, or what it was listed for, but I can tell you it is probably a good deal. You might check with them if you are interested.

Yeap. I really liked that tractor and would have bought another but our dealer went away. I have a Kubota 8540 but the Zetor has a bunch of features that make it better. If a Zetor dealer where to open in Victoria, I would be there on day one.

were you using Goliad? Guess Bills would be the Closest to you that sucks... we just got out of Zetor ourselves.. hate to see them go the tractors their self were great machines.. they needed more dealer support in the US

Yeah, it is all about support. There is a dealer up at Lockhart still but there are never any Zetors on his lot so that's not good. Just turned 1200 on my Kubota so it still has a lot of live left in it.

I think the Kubota is the roughest tractor I've ever operated. It has hurt my back a number of times to include sending me to the doc followed by physical therapy. They suggested I get an inversion table as the problem is always lumbar compression, so I did. Now whenever I get out of it I hang upside down like a bat, the table is about five paces from where I park. No more problems, dang thing (tractor) is just stiff. It has a great operators seat, but it just cannot overcome the poor ride the chassis produces. Put a front-end loader on it, and you really have to watch it. I had the grappling claws on the loader this afternoon. Load them up with live oak and you serious about asking it to hurt your back.

Lol yezzir that style tractor will do it to you we got a few models that are silmilar. Have you loaded the tires with water? It can make a huge change in how a tractor rides.. that and air ride but that's a bit costly.. water is an easy cheap lasting option

Yeah, I have water in them. Just part of living with a utility tractor.

was hoping that was a 6 foot tiller, I've only got 60 hp and wouldn't be big enough for the 8'.

I finally had my tires loaded last Fall, and while the tractor feels more solid and works better, the ride is actually rougher. When on gravel or hard pan, I feel every lug of the ag tires right into the seat. Common or do yall think maybe too much air?

What is the water level (%) and the PSI?

Went back up to Kelly Mudd in Hallettsville to pick up my BWF disc. It took a bit but they were able to find the middlebreak and furrow fillers for the '60 ~ '70 manufactured disc. They also went through all the scrappers to make sure the were the correct scrappers for the correct gang row. Been wanting to do all of this for a long time.

No more centerline of growth left between the left & right disc gangs!



No more furrows left at the outside of the disc pass. This has become a big thing for my roads and senderos that I disc as fire breaks. They become a ditch of sorts but the fillers will do just that to that outboard disc pass.
