Feeding Protein

Feeding Protein - 02/03/17 06:52 PM

If you had to pick 3-4 months out of the year to feed protein which months would it be? Our thoughts are to feed really heavy at certain times of the year instead of a moderate rate 8 months out of the year. Thanks in advance.

You might just figure out how much you want to spend on it and figure out how long it takes them to eat that up.

I would probably feed during antler growing times, but post rut is important too.

IMO the most critical is post rut, Dec thru early Mar. The bucks' "blueprint" for their next set of antlers will be set by their body condition before they start growing again. Also the time of year, usually, when the natural groceries are at their least.

2nd for me would be late summer when everything is brown. My thinking is help get the bucks in good shape going into the rut, and help the does stay in condition while nursing fawns.

Those two times are when our protein consumption spikes the most, which also tells me that is when the deer want/need it.
