300 bo first hogs

300 bo first hogs - 03/04/18 11:44 AM

Put together a lightweight 300 bo just for giggles to see if it was good enough for brush bustin' hogs. After 20 minutes or so had 2 down drt. Had a runner that took 2 in the rear end but managed to get across the fence to safety with no recovery. Both hogs were 50 yds or less.

It's always nice to get a little blood on a new build.

Putting them in the right place, nicely done.

300BLK is fine in its range and the barnes black tip is worth the extra change.

Flop some more now. Soueee'

Breaking it in the right way. Heck yeah. I've considered a 300BLK build before but I'd chop the barrel down and put a shockwave brace on it.

Have a 30p BO short, suppressed, using sub sonic ammo... at 50 yard, bullet entered but no exit, at 65 yards shot 2 that were for sure hits and with that being 3rd pig to run off, (0-3 recovered) took to the super Sonics suppressed. Nailed 2 more and dropped in their tracks. 1 shot, dropped and the other ran in circles not knowing where shot came from. He calmed down and ate more corn then bam.... 2-2 with supersonic suppressed. I took on of the pigs and leaned him on a tree, tried shooting it at 50 yards with the subsonic again thinking i could be for sure on the shots. Shot right behind front shoulder in the (shield) area and bullet bounced. I know smoke hogs with suppressed supersonic bullets... haven't had a runner yet. Anyone else experience This? (Pic and post is making me want to do a new build and drop the suppressor idea)

with subs you better go for a behind the ear shot..

jbaker, the sub rounds in the body will certainly allow the pigs to run off. The bullet has no expansion and will only punch a .308" hole. You have to remember, you are basically shooting a 45 ACP in a rifle platform with a non-expanding bullet at that point. A 45 pushes a 200-230 grain bullet about 950 to 1000 fps. If you are running a shorter barrel (less than 16"), you are losing even more speed and energy. (Look into my SBR subs!!) If I were to hunt with subs, head and neck shots would be what I would go for. No body shots what so ever.

I personally shoot the 300 blk out as my main hunting rifle in a 16" bolt gun suppressed for the last 5 years. I also have an AR-15 in 300 blk out as my night hunting rifle. I shoot all supersonic ammo, like the 125 grain SST or BT loads. The 125 grain does very well with perfect mushroom shaped expansion.

The blkout is more than capable, but you have to use it right.

The day I got my BO together I went to the range with 220 gr. subsonics...it was all they had at my store. I figured it was fine to break in the barrel, but...it wouldn't cycle. It would eject but not push back far enough to reload a round. I was concerned the gun may have issues. Bought some Hornady Full Boar 110 gr and it shoots smooth as silk now.
