Red or Green light for hogs?

Looking for a "flood" light for hogs at night. Which do you prefer? I know this is debated question but looking for real world feedback. I like green as you can see better through the scope but I hear red is a much better option that won't spook them off as much. Also looking at a slow glow hog light that takes 2 minutes to come up from 5% to 60% strength so they get acclimated to it slowly.

have they ever spooked using green TL? Do you use a constant on or motion activated?

They will get used to any color after a while. My favorite is green, but I've used red and white. White tends to startle them more, but they always come back, as long as there's food still on the ground.

I've experimented while bow hunting a lot on deer and hogs. I also predator hunt. RED is the only way to go as far as I'm concerned. They just can't see it at all. I bought a red and green LED years ago and if I had a doe still at the feeder bow hunting after it got dark I would turn the red one on. You can flash it, wave it around, shine it at their eyes, whatever and they don't pay any attention. Turn the green one on and they instantly snort and run. Predator hunting I've seen similar. Red just doesn't have an effect on them.

I have experimented as well, but with only hogs. I find that they can see red and green both. However, they do tend to react less to the red light.

I find the notion that you can "shine it at their eyes" and they won't pay attention to be more of an unfamiliarity/ behavior issue, more so than a capability issue. Hogs familiar with IR lights will spook at seeing the dull glow of an IR illuminator. So I have no doubt that they can readily see the red glow of a red light emitting fully in the visible red portion of the spectrum.

This is in between both and I have thousands of pictures of hogs underneath the glow of this light. They are extremely effective from my experience. We need someone to incorporate this technology into a rifle or bow mounted light!

I have both red and green lights for my rifle mounted lights, but use RED exclusively for feeder/flood lights.

There is no question in my mind that it spooks hogs 'less' than green.

It's a lot harder for me to see with a red light.
Deer seem spooky under any green light I have shined on them, either conventional,laser or LED.
Pigs don't seem to notice red, green or white the first time or two they are lit up but will become aware of any of them.

As for a feeder light, a 40.00 white solar powered LED flood light from Home Depot mounted about 12' in the air shining down on the feeder from the same side you shoot from worked as well as anything else I tried.

If you do more than 2 or 3 feeders, you could add a little money and buy digital night vision and you are not limited to the area around feeders that are lit up.

Military uses red to preserve night vision with dark adapted eyes. Green colored lights were'nt on the radar when I was in the army. Still aren't as far as I know.

Thanks everyone. I was leaning towards red but I can see so much better with green. I'm looking at slow or soft turn on lights but they are pricey.

They can see all colors of light, even infrared illuminators and lasers. Go with a color you can hunt by and use that. Feeding will help them change their mind and a little time.

Problem is they are not coming to a regular feeder. So I go find them then set up. No time to "adjust" them.

Weve used both down here and not sure it makes much difference. I would say try both and see what your preference is for. Also, red or green cellophane wrap work fine in pinch

I've always had good luck with green in my area. There's 2 methods that have worked for me in the past.

1. Just do 1 or 2 second bursts of light when you know they are at the feeder. They will spook at first but will quickly get accustomed to it and gradually increase the time that the light is on so you can pick which one you want. In my experience they of course scatter after the gun shot but a lot of the time a good deal of them return within an hour or 2. (I set my feeder for every 2 hours when I'm hog hunting)

2. If your light has a brightness adjustment on it experiment with it so its just barely bright enough for you to see all the way to your feeder. They seem to be a lot less spooked by that rather than full blown brightness.

Green! Red is good too, but green seems to work best for deer and hogs. Walked up 60 yards on a group of 15 two nights ago. Got within 5 FEET! Hopped up on feeder and sat above them for 30 min shining them so my kids on mule could see. After about an hour and 3 test feeds of corn later they all walked off but one. Grabbed her by the tail and she is in my pen as we speak. Got it all captured on the game cam! Lol

Red works too, but green is easier on your eyes and seems to work better. We have green boar torch lights on our feeders and they work great. Constant light and motion sensor enhanced brightness. Course they will get used to anything on a feeder after about a week.

I use both but with my experience green is better, but if the hog is close use a light with a flood feature or a dimmer switch because they do not like the intensity.

If you have service you need Cell Cameras. Goto property and wait for a txt. Make you life alot easier.

Having tested both colors thoroughly I have to say hogs are less nervous about red. Everything I have put a green light on at night notices it immediatly unless it is dimmed down. It is true that you can see farther with green but if it spooks the animal it is self defeating. Also true if you have green feederlights set up after a while they will get used to it and not be so spooky around it. If your blasing hundreds of lumens of any color into their eyes they will notice you for sure!

I hunted wild boars in Brazil and used for a long time a green illuminator type ND3 and found it very good. Other animals that can not be hunted here (such as capybaras and foxes) allowed the approach up to 10 yards and I have already lit some boars from the top of the tree in the feeder and also did not get scared.
Only on one occasion did I light up first (in the leaves) and then down the pig ran away. I think the movement of the leaf shadows scared the boar.
But recently I had a surprise. I moved the feeder to another region some 30 km away with more pigs, and both the great solitaries that came under the tree and the smaller groups with 10 to 15 members would escape when I turned on any light, both green and red. I even put filters to darken the lights even more, and even then they ran away when I lit some of them. I even experimented with an ultraviolet light, and even it scared the boars.
The conclusion I came to is that they are pigs that were already shot (at least a lot of them) and survived.
In this region there are many hunters who do not use calibers suitable for the boar and also shoot anyway as the pigs do not stop under the spotlight.
I was only able to shoot down a big loner and a pig with my crossbow when I used a night vision scope that a friend lent me.
So I believe that boars that have had any human experience and scared themselves will hardly be under the focus of any light, be it green or red.
But that's just for lighting from the gun.
Illumination on the feeders I think they will become accustomed to both the green and the red, just taking more or less between one or the other.
I also noticed a difference in the green tone between two ND3 illuminators.
Mine was a very dark green, lackluster, despite allowing an animal to be located 50 yards away and a friend's other one was lighter, bothering the eyes more because it glowed more.
According to information from Laser Genetics the models with lighter light are those of 520nm. The darkest ones are 532nm.
Mine broke and I'm going to look for another 532nm because I thought it has a more disguised light and therefore bother less the boars.
