Hogs have disappeared...Why?

Posted By: Team Stone

Hogs have disappeared...Why? - 10/31/16 03:09 PM

I have been feeding year round, fresh corn and on occasion a concoction of soured corn. I'm the only one who hunts the place. As of last week, no hogs are coming to the feeder!

Any idea where they have gone or what the heck is going on???

Good crop of acorns nearby may be your problem. Happens in our area this time of year.

Have you noticed that the hogs move out after a significant rain? It seems when the ground is wet that they venture out. They'll be back.

Vegas. Hogs frequently go to Vegas this time of year. roflmao

As noted, this is the time of year when the mast starts really hitting the ground. I tend to have corn pile up under my feeders during this period and often lose a lot of my hogs (often all of them) and many of my deer. Or, I get pictures of the hogs or deer on my game cameras, but they aren't under the feeders. If I am watching the feeders, I will often see them just pass through the area. Maybe they stop for a quick nibble (literally one or two sample bites of corn) or maybe they just casually walk through the feeder area on their way to somewhere else.

Agree, that it is most likely due to the mast crop. Much easier for hogs (and deer) to quickly pick up a belly full of acorns than to do the same with corn. I believe they find acorns more palatable than corn as well. If you have White Oaks on your property or nearby, that's where they are.

Yes - all of my deer and hogs have disappeared in the last 2 weeks (although I think one nice deer was hit by a car from what i understand).

I've got the deer, but my hogs have wandered off to somewhere. Just one stinky boar showing up on camera lately. I'm sure it's the acorns that have them occupied somewhere else, but I don't know where the acorns are.

Saturday morning before day light when I went to go let May Bell out on the back deck I ended up having a couple of minutes conversation with a buck chowing down on seeds at the bird feeders. They're funny critters. Least ways he wasn't eating what's left of my grape vines.

Yeah, it seems the hogs will walk right over corn to get to acorns.

Squirrel and deer have vacated my back yard feeder for the past 4 weeks. Normally there are 8 squirrel and 6 or more deer that would visit every day. Know the squirrel are still in the area from all the chattering they do. Acorns are dropping and guess they are sick of a full summer of easy corn. The past 2 days both have started to reappear though. Have no worries those hogs will return. Everything gets a free pass in my back yard. Have never seen a hog back there before but the day one shows up the lead will fly it's way.

Like you we feed year round and are covered up in hogs all spring/summer. They usually disappear or we see far less of them during the winter. I believe its due to all of our neighbors who only feed right before and during deer season filling their feeders.

Last year in Red River County, We had a ton of hogs till mid December. All left, except for a couple of boars, until September of this year. We also fed year round and since we were mainly deer hunting we did not put a lot of pressure on them.

Not saying its not acorns, but we see the same thing every year just before and in the beginning of hunting season and there are no oak trees within miles of our property.

They have all gone to my lease! Opening weekend, we saw over 40 at several different stands. We killed 7 that weekend, I shot four of them.

Shot two more this weekend, and others killed 4 more.
