Quick Question - What do you do?

Quick Question - What do you do? - 09/27/16 07:49 PM

Last night I was in a blind about 7:10 pm (still light) when a boar came out about 25 yards away. Stuck my AR10 out the window and when I clicked off my safety, he took off. Luckily, a couple of hours later in the night, 4 more came by and I took off the safety with the gun still low in the blind - using a sock to muffle the noise - and then raised the gun up for the shot. I'm a shotgunner so I'm new to hunting like this. How do you handle it? Or was that just a freak thing? And there was NO doubt it was the safety (it was pretty loud). Maybe I just need to do it slower and more controlled?

Thanks for the help. I don;t get a lot of chances at these dudes, so I need to eliminate them when I can.

Just do it really slow if they are close enough for them to hear it.

I hunt a lot with an AR. I always ease the safety off slowly with my strong hand. An oversized safety makes the chore much easier.

Hey bfl, does this look and sound familiar. It happens at about 43 seconds in the video. What the metallic sound is, is obvious...

I usually use my non shooting hand to slowly switch to fire it's easy to avoid the click like that.

Or if hunting from a stand just take the safe off once you crawl in and get set up. Lean the gun in the corner or have it in your lap it's not gonna just shoot itself so keep your finger off the trigger till ready to fire.

I run a star safety selector on my AR. Very easy to stay in contact with it.

No 'click' that way.

Thanks for all of the thoughts guys. Might be weird, but I keep a few socks in my backpack. I use them in a lot of ways (the safety was the most recent). Leaning gun against them, whether wood or metal, quiets the sound when the blind moves a little, you can put them around water bottles to muffle sound from them, put them on your hands if you don;t have your gloves and it gets cold, use as a neck warmer, extra pair on the feet or lay them on your knees/thighs when things get cold and you didn't expect it, tie them around the foreend of your gun to keep wood/plastic/metal from hitting something hard and making a sound, etc. As you can see, it was a mistake at first, but now I have found lots of uses! woot

I dislike tube socks. I have several pair from decades ago when they seemed like a good idea. I use 'em now for all sorts of things, from hot weather sweatbands to packing cushions and to muffle sounds. A year or so ago, my hunting buddy stepped into a really deep mud hole, and I gave him some to use as socks! I told him the deal was he had to keep them, but his wife washed them and made him give them back. Dang! bang

I have found if you put a lot of pressure IN on the safety then flip it slowly there is virtually no sound.

Haven't tried that, but I would have last night when it was in the 40s if I wouldn't have had a balaclava in my backpack. I did have the socks OVER my gloves though. grin
