You'll need to get on him as soon as you can. Boars travel a lot and will not stay in one area for long.

No offense, but don't be too disappointed when you boar doesn't make the 300+ lb list. You're looking at approximately 240 lbs. there IMO.

Anyway, good luck, hope to see some pics.

Flint.

I would agree that it prolly isn't a 300 pounder, but it is a nice boar. Good luck!

He's a big pig. Good luck hunting him.

I'm in agreement that he's probably less than 300#, those are pretty rare.

But he's a big ol' pig, that's sure. Good Luck!

Throw just as much corn as you normally do, figure out what time he normally shows up and be there 2 hours early. My guess is about 230lbs.

That is a nice looking pig. Take the previous advice and get on him quick, before he moves on.

I've been hanging almost every pig on an electronic scale for going on 3 years, just to try to improve my ability to estimate weights. I have gotten a lot better once they are on the ground, but I still consistently over estimate them on the hoof.

What I have learned:
Most folks hit as much as 50% over on weights. If i do not see a scale or a tape measure in the pictures, I immediately discount the claimed weights from most folks. This is certainly true for some of paid guides and outfitters! A big part of their income is tips and the bigger the clients pig, the bigger the tip they are likely to get. I have seen one of the popular guys in the Houston area grab a pig by front and back legs and heft him into the clients pickup...then declare him 210#. Try hefting one of your 200$ friend into the back a pickup sometime.

My (over)estimate puts him at 250-260.

But he is still a BIG PIG! If you don't have a scale, use a cloth tape measure around his chest, then take the length. Several sites have a very good chart for estimating based on tape measures. Take the head and leave it for the buzzards and fire ants, the boil it, glue the teeth and cutters, and mount it.

I bought a scale, now referred to as my lie detector. As for guessing weight without a scale, I have found that I can not drag a deer or hog of 250 pounds. Naturally, ya gotta shoot em first...

So try to drag them. 150 pounds is dragable. 200 is borderline dragable, so you drag em a little ways. Again, be sure to shoot em first...works better that way.

This is spot on! More than once I've looked at a hog on the ground and thought "This one looks like it weighs about 130 pounds". Then I started to drag it and thought "I think it's more like 150+". After dragging it 100 yards or so, I begin saying to myself "Ugh! This thing probably weighs more than 180 pounds". When I get it to the truck and put a tape measure around it, sure enough it's close to 180. I've tried to drag 200 pound hogs, and it is REALLY difficult.

I now carry a 2-wheel hand truck, and use it to haul hogs out of the field.

... Well , how'd the all-night X-sight HD affair go?

We took a Sightmark Photon XT and Pulsar Digisight N750 out this weekend, not too shabby...

Depending upon where you set the trap (shaded area or in direct sunlight) you might well have a dead hog by Tuesday if it were to be trapped Sunday or Monday.

Good luck.

If its already dead when get there, saving money on ammo I guess?

Re: Time to pull an all nighter! - 06/20/16 04:01 PM

Yeah if it's already dead that'll give you time to use it as a recording subject at 50/100/200/300 yards to show us what the X-Sight HD (Have Doubts) image looks like

I made sure to set the trap in a [place that is 100% shade all day. Should be good. We will see this evening! Will let you know!

ARRRRRGG!!! No Hogs cae to teh spot since sunday, or deer.. Very strange as tey had been coming nightly. I did make a lot of noise using a trimmer and saw to clear some area for the trap in the shade.. May take a few more days to sette down.. threw out some more and corn in the area to spice it up a bit. will check it again on Thursday. I am hopeful!

They do roam around, human sent might set them off for a few days or change in the area, like cutting the brush and trees.
